My 1520 with a webcam came with a built in microphone. So if you ordered it with a webcam, you should have an integrated microphone, too, as the 1520 and the 1720 are designed along very similar lines. The earbuds that are included if you order a webcam, for instance, do not include a speaker.
If you didn't get a webcam, microphones are such cheap components that I would still be very surprised if it was omitted.
shoyer, You are correct. The only microphone you would have is if you have the webcam installed. Other than that, you have to use the mic-out jack or get an accessory for your notebook.
