This thread is for everyone out there who has run Dell MediaDirect outside of Windows, and gotten the error message explaining it cannot access the harddrive, possibly due to BitLocker, which we all know it isn't.
I ask to please at least answer the poll. If you have the time, please explain in-depth your problem.
For me, I follow the reinstallation instructions word for word. After that, MediaDirect works outside of Windows a few times, maybe 3 or 4, but then fails after that. Any time it fails, it switches the power button and MediaDirect button until I boot into Vista using the MediaDirect button. After the first time it fails, the in-Windows version will open once, but when I close it, it stays in my tasks, and won't run again until I remove it manually.

I have the same problem!
I shrinked the Vista partition and I added new 4 logical partitions between OS and MediaDirect...
I try to boot with MediaDirect button but always the same error message appear:
"Dell MediaDirect Express cannot access your hard drive. This may be because you have enabled Microsoft BitLocker (Drive Encryption).
MediaDirect Express is not accessible when Microsoft BitLocker is enabled."
NB:
I not reinstalled MediaDirect, I only created new partitions...
I never used MediaDirect with its button before I shrinked the Vista partition.. but I think that the problem is related to it...
Any idea? -
I have the same problem, it worked when i had vista installed but becz now i am running on xp, i think this may be the reason? im not sure if a reinstall would solve this though. i'd never really use media direct becz i personally find that it takes as long to load as the operating system itself so i dont really see the point in it anyway but yes mine complains about the bitlocker error.

Yeah, I have had this problem as well. I just don't bother with MediaDirect anymore and will just have the extra 2GB of hard drive space.

I'm going to try it out for the purposes of your poll, interest of science and all that. But really, what is the use of it? Save some battery life?
I'm expanding the MediaDirect partition and installing a Linux OS on it. -

mine is fine. try reinstalling it....IMO i like the windows media center better.
i removed mine from system for more HDD space.. useless for me cause i dont care about battery life that much
and i dont watch dvd on laptop...thats what tv's are for -
Worked fine for me on a 1420, now I'm going to delete it.
One thing I did notice, though, is that, well, my laptop sound is crap, which is why I got a soundblaster xfi card, which doesn't function from MediaDirect.
Does Dell MediaDirect fail for you?
