I recieved the replacement part(hard disk 80gb) a few days back. The original harddisk that came with the system was 120gb. So i contacted dell regarding the mistake made and they are now sending another hard drive. When i checked the details of service calls it says 120gb. Does dell check what they are sending.
Also i read somewhere that dell also doesnt check for the serial numbers of the returned parts, is it true?

They dont check serial numbers but do check that it is the same part. You were likely sent the item by error.

If they don't check the serial numbers how do they know if it's the same part, like if i send back another harddrive, how would they now it's not the one they sent out (as a wrong replacement)?

Well, they could look if it said 80GB or 120GB on the bottom.
They often seem to make mistakes. ;)

Im contacting a mod to move this to the "Dell Customer support issues" section. Just FYI, :)

They dont know or care if its the exact part just that it is the same size/speed per say. If you dont believe me than thats your own problem. I'm dell certified for repairs for over 5 years.

As long as its the same size and same interface it should be ok. Its not really revenge because they dont send new drives out, they are refurbished...

In fact if you call them and ask nicely you dont even have to send it back at all. (true story)

Depends on the part. Some they consider disposable like keyboards such. If they think that they will be able to reuse it i doubt they will let you keep it.

what do you think nizzy, will they figure out if i send back the wrong drive, considering its the same company and size is also the same. The only difference is the speed. The one dell sent out is 7200rpm. I dont think it will be an issue since they forgot to look at the size when sending the part and infact were totally unaware of it.

They could very well notice the speed difference. It is put into a machine and it verifies that the one sent back matches the spec sheet.

In the end its better to be honest.
