I don't need 3G, just want GPS on the laptop and was wondering if it works by itself

Yes. It does, however, need the proper antennas in the system. You also need a SIM card if it's flashed for AT&T.

Aren't they installed with the Gobi card?

But still without paying for the service?

I have an Adamo and it has GPS. It works great. I use my HTC TP2 as a wifi router because I don't have wireless broadband connection from either AT&T or other cellular carrier.

It doesn't if you have a map program installed like Streets and Trips. Trust me, it works.
