One of the reasons why I want a Dell laptop is because I think the battery life is good... Are there other 14.1 inch laptops as cheap as the 1420 with better battery life?

While it's not released yet, the Compal IFT00 should be similarly priced to the Dell e1420, and have similar battery life (with comparable battery options selected.) Another option would be dv2500t, which should average better than 4 hours with the 12-cell battery.

The Dell Latitude D630 with 9-cell main battery and 6-cell media bay battery will probably have the best battery life of any 14-inch (or larger) notebook I know of. Choose integrated graphics for optimal battery life (although you won't be able to play 3D games on it).

If you ignore macbooks that is. Also the 3 year old Acer travelmate 800 series does 5 hours even with the 15 inch version of the screen. The old IBMs (T4x series) could manage 5 hours easily as well. Not sure about current benchmarks.

I like how one of the new VAIOs has both integrated and discrete. It saves battery life when you're not using it, and when you want to game it turns on the more powerful one. However, I think that it only had the 8400M GS and X3100, not the 8600M GT.

well for me dell's laptop life has been great on all laptops i have had from them

just got rid of a macbook. battery life was a shade over 4hrs.

I think the Dell Latitude D630 with modular bay battery has close to 9-10 hours of battery life with the integrated video card.
The Dell Latitude with integrated video card and the 9 cell battery gets 5 hours and 45 minutes of battery life with the screen set to full brightness and wi-fi off. It has 5 hours and 15 minutes of battery life with wi-fi on and the same settings.
Does Dell have the best battery life?
