My Vostro 1500 has some cosmetic flaws on the palm rest. It's a part I can replace myself as i'm trying to spare having to send the unit in for repair, plus I don't trust their repair service.

Do you think Dell would send out a new palm rest replacement if I called or would I be wasting my time?

It couldn't hurt to try. :)
When I got my hdd and optical drive replaced, they asked if I could do it myself, or if they needed to send a technician out. I don't know, but something as trivial as the palm rest shouldn't be a problem.
    Good luck. :)

If you have complete care they can send you the palmrest to you and you can replace it, but they will say that it will be under your responsability because the palmrest is not a customer removable unit like HDs or DVDs. They can send the part to you, but you need to specify that to the agent before they create the dispatch.

I don't have complete care. :( It's not all that difficult to remove.

If you purchase it as a spare part, they will send it out to you. They will only send out a technician (or request that the laptop be sent to them) if the repair is covered by the warranty.

Would it matter if I spoke to a supervisor and explained that it's an easy fix and I would rather do it myself? :p

If you call their spare parts department and order it, they will just mail it out to you (especially if you don't give them info such as your service tag and stuff like that).

But they'll charge right? The unit is still under warranty.

Yes, cosmetic damage is not covered by the warranty unless the paint is peeling or something. Damage that arises from normal use is, well, normal.

EDIT: I see where's you're going. If they're willing to replace it, you can request that you replace it yourself. They may require that you send the old one back (it depends, they won't want things like keyboards and small plastics).

Look, there is not a problem when sending a part as parts only dispatch, even if it is a motherboard, if you are going to install it and you assume all the responsibility, the agent will send the part to you without escalating, but if you don't have complete care the replacement will not be covered, as cosmetic scratches are considered accidental damage, and it is covered under complete care. And no, the palmrest is not required to be sent back to them, there are a few items which does not include to be returned the palmrest is in that list.

    Thanks for the explanation. :)

One thing I have noticed as well is that the right mouse button is kinda rubbing on something when you press down on it. Maybe i'll wait till it gets a little worse before requesting a palm rest replacement.

They do send the palmrest if you order it, i had some "cosmetic" issues, due to acid pH when i sweat, something related to sweat not drying (xD), and staying too much time on the palm rest material, anyway, got mine replaced, just jad to take some photos, send those to them, in the next couple of days i had a tech guy replaicing my palm rest, :D.
