It will work, but will downclock to 667.

I just checked. It said 667 DDR2 on the support document. They used to have PC-6400 DDR2 in the option list when Vostro 1400 was first released in August. So it is definitely compatible but underclocked.

Just to check on ram issue. If factory version comes 2 X 1GB dual-channel, will it be better if I change it to 2GB + 1GB (total 3GB) non dual-channel ram?

I wouldn't waste the extra money that it will cost you. Like someone already said, it will downclock anyway, so it won't be worth it.

Dual channel only gives marginal improvement. More memory may be more beneficial if you have 1GB or less right now. There may not be much improvement upgrading from 2x1GB to 2+1GB.
