I am about to get a inspiron 1520 with the 3yr warranty. I wanted to save a few bucks and buy my own RAM on my own and install it myslef. I am worried that it might void my warranty. If someone knows if its possible to maybe cheat the system by changing the ram if it needs repairs or something like that? Please give me some options than paying 250 dollars for 3gb of ram.

Unless you break something while adding/replacing the ram, I don't see why it would void the warranty.

Does not void the warranty. The only thing Dell will not warranty is the RAM you purchased to replace their OEM memory. However, if in the process of opening the computer, you manage to pour an entire can of orange soda, you would be out of luck. Just be careful and go slowly; installing memory is one of the easiest, fastest, and most dramatic improvements you can make to your system.

It does not void your warranty. However, dell will not warranty that ram you stuck in your machine, but they will for everything else. If your ram dies, you will need to contact the ram manufacuter for a replacement, not dell.

You can honestly do anything to that machine without it voiding. Although you break anything, you're boned.

However, as others have said, it is safe to replace RAM (and HDD). -

You can do anything to the machine you like as long as you cause no damadge to it... If you do cause damadge then they will not warrant you on the problem. Ive opend my laptop before to replace the video card and the dell technitions say its fine as long as i havnt damadged the system.

Yes, you can install your own RAM, so do it!
Does adding my own RAM void my warranty?
