I folded for a few hours on my last m1530 but it was almost unbearable to sit on my lap after it had been folding for so long.

Does anyone fold with their laptops in here? I know my Q6600 pumps out the SMP (especially o/c'd to 3.6 :D ) but I believe this T7700 would do SMP units pretty decently...I would figure in the 18 - 20 hour range.

2 Days ago i folded for a few minutes before i felt like i was damaging my new toy. I've folded for years, but i don't think i'm quite ready to do it on a BRAND NEW laptop. Maybe in a year or two...

and i totally agree with outofthisworld, folding on my brand new 1530 makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand. just can do it. lol

Like I said above...I folded on my first m1530 but haven't gotten the nerve to fold on this one. TECHNICALLY it should be OK, as Dell should have known some people would run it at 100% for the life of the machine. At least I HOPE they would have thought of it.

It's a great cause, but they need to break the data into smaller chunks. There's a reason why they're unused CPU cycles - using them results in lots of noise and heat. Probaly enough to melt a Dell laptop after 100 hours.

If you wanted to you could run regular units...a regular unit would only run the CPU at 50% instead of the SMP that would run it at 100%. This SHOULD cut your heat output by at least a few degrees centigrade.

Yeah ... i'm running whatever's default. I didn't configure the client to ask for special work units or anything. My Pentium 4 2.66GHz (Northwood/120nm/non-HT) is a mono-core.

I just couldn't do that to my lovely 1720... Heat does horrible things to computer parts.

I'm actually doing it right now for the first time.

I'm not sure if I'm comfotable with it though. After just a few minutes the second level of my fan came on. First time in a VERY long time my fan has kicked in this high.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to uninstall this.

If your "scared" to ruin your laptop because it might "break" from heat you might as well not use it to avoid "wear and tear".

Seriously though, it should definitely run it 24/7 without any problems... running SMP on my Vostro 1400 (T7500) (with laptop cooler) both cores @ 46 C @ 100% on both cores.

Don't worry kid, I remember my first time. I was in High School, 1988...

My "FAN" didn't kick in right away either....

10 years and 2 kids later....my "FAN" works just great.
Your first time is always uncomfortable.....

LoL...it SHOULD run fine on a laptop...my buddy runs it on his P4 laptop and I think I am going to install it on this m1530 just to crunch more for my sister.

Is anyone running Folding at Home on their 1530 full time? One person in the Dell forums said it didn't really have to ramp up the fans that much to cool down from it, but I know the Macbook Pro seemed to be straining horribly from it.

If the 1530 can't really run Folding, that may push me towards the 1730...
