Some universities have deals with Dell, U of T for example. Most schools don't have anything going on though. Whenever I ask a rep about student discounts in Canada I get nothing, not even a reply :p

I asked this after I ordered my laptop, but they emailed me back and said to talk to my University about it, I didn't want to cancel my order so I never did.

    Aha, found the email.

my question would then be "why would a faculty advisor know about the discount and not you? Why would Dell not have any information regarding such discounts?"

    @murdoc

I have no clue, Dell support has let me down whenever I've contacted them. I don't even know how to get in touch with a person that would know, I don't think a faculty advisor would know either, and I can't find anything on my university's website about hardware discounts (UBC).

Thank you for the prompt reply. Do you know the amount of savings I'd get and what procedures I might have to follow when ordering my laptop to get the discount? I know I'm asking a lot but I'm completely clueless as to where to find such information.

I totally agree with you. I'm always lost or left hanging. One time I talked and talked to try to get the answer to my question (which he/she never answered) and the operator cut me off during the chat session. I'm trying google right now but I'm not sure if I'll have much luck with it.

I've read some other threads regarding university discounts on this forum and so I decided to investigate into it by using their "award winning live tech support". Here's how it went..

4:04:26 PM CA SALES Manoj 1252: please check the above link to view our current deals

4:05:07 PM CA SALES Manoj: 1252 these systems are at very good deals and are open for students, teachers and others

4:05:31 PM You: yes I notice there are special deals, but i would like to know how much university discount I could get. my college is "--------"

4:07:07 PM CA SALES Manoj 1252: we don't have any additional discounts for students, because the deals right now are specially planned for students

4:07:27 PM CA SALES Manoj 1252: so the online prices are final

4:07:45 PM You: ok. Thank you

Well, appeareantly the rep here tells us there's no Canadian university discount deals. So what's the real deal here?

I asked one of the representatives through Dell Chat about the discount and they promptly said "no." I would check with your campus computer store, if there is one. They're good at ordering computers/accessories and other tech items for discount educational prices (ie. I ordered my PalmOne Keyboard for half the price through the campus computer store than through retail pricing). My univeristy campus computer store here in Ontario also sells Dell Latitudes, Dell desktops and recently pulled off the older Dell Ispiron 640m from their website. So I'm assuming my university has some connection through Dell.

Actually, through my internet sleuthing I found U of T's EPP number through a PFD file, but do they do background checks to see if you work at U of T?

They... might.. I'm not sure about that either... I don't think students would by any chance get EPP discounts right?

Where can I ask for discounts? I've tried the U of T computer shop and they only have Fuji and Apple notebooks.

UBC doesn't have student discounts. I go there so it was easy to find out :p

And HAHA @ Manoj. Oh man! He was the rep I dealt with at Dell for about 2 weeks. Was very prompt every time I talked about buying, but as soon as I started pressing him about finding out anything about a student discount in Canada he stopped responding!

What do you mean by "reprentitive at Queens"? Do you mean counsellor? The problem is there's far too many administrative departments just inside a college (never mind the university itself), how do I know which person I'm supposed to look for?

Also regarding the university discounts - does anyone know if Dell will add an additional $50 off of my $200 student discount coupon code since it is now $250? I signed up for that site early July and have yet to use the code, though I can't sign up for a new one because my email is already registered.

are you a Queen's University student? Most students that live around Ontario already got their info in the mail in an issue of "its@Queen's"

I'll do some more digging if you are going to Queen's

not quite, but as people have posted before on this thread, they claim that UT also gets discounts. I'm a UT student, but i've read my news letters and nothing like that was mentioned.

i've been at UofT for 2 years, and i've never heard anything about "discounts" .. it also seems like only Arts & Science students at UT get a discount .. that's absolutely ridiculous
btw, if anyone has any updated news, plz let us know here
