I read a lot of the comps out there have WXGA Trubrite LCD screen. I saw my friends dell and the screen looked different and not as nice as most comps out there.(maybe it was an older model who knows) Does dell offer this? Or does it come this way?

I think its called True Life, and its usually about $30. I have it, and the colors are bright and awesome looking.

Most manufacturers have some version of it.

Silly question is Dell's E1705/9400 Standard: 17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ a glossy or a matte screen?

Matte screen. If you want glossy (TrueLife), it will cost you additional $150.

With that $150 you will also get a higher resolution UXGA screen.

I had the expereince this week of receiving a Dell 1505 with the UXGA TrueLife glossy screen. I had gotten a great deal on the outlet site for a Dual core T2500 with this option for $894. Unfortunately I returned it the next day. I had been using a Sony FS 15.4 screen and when placing the models side by side it was no contest.

If you use a web page like Newegg which has lots of white background, the Dell displays as grey and not bright white with crisp black text.

I thought maybe it was my model being a refurb but then checked a newly purchased E1705 from a co-worker. Exact same result.

I know some have had issues with Sony but the color clarity and brightness are un-matched. I did a quick store check in CompUsa as well. Only one that was close was Toshiba Qosimo 17" model. The newer 17" Satellites are nice but still show as grey. The Toshiba and HP/Compaq were better than the Dell at least but no match for Sony. The Sony is still at 1280x800 and Dell was higher so that affected font size slightly.

I was very disapointed about my Dell purchase since it was a great deal and really wanted to keep it but the stepdown was too much for me.

But thats why everybody makes their own choices on what they see as best :)
