I'm considering buying a 600m. However from reading the posts it seems like everyone is complaining that they get really hot. Does anyone have a 600m that doesn't get hot? Thank you very much.

Mine has been behaving a little better recently. When I have it on my lap it is very difficult not to block the fan vent which is on the bottom. When I'm mindful of keeping the vent unblocked it doesn't get quite as horribly hot. Seems like it'll be managable. But I'll keep you posted with some more long-term use.

Of course, my machine may just be an outlier. I'm going to watch it for another week before I call for support.

Yeah, all notebooks get warm, some get hot, but not usually McDonald's coffee, sue for a million dollars, crotch burning hot. Those with more memory tend to put off a little more heat as well.

I don thtink that I should have said too much about the heat that I dont get with my 600m. until today, there was not much of a problem with heat. I know that if i keep the bottom fan covered too long that my bottom gets very very hot. The key is to keep you notebook in a free air flow and take breaks with it. If you want to keep it on that is fine, just turn it upside down for th times that you do not use it so that it cna use the other fans to get some air in thurr (there).

no complaints with it otherwise. This is an excellent computer and I would say that you will be extremly happy with it.

I just ordered one and i'll get it next week probably, i'll keep an eye on it as well. I currently have a Toshiba Tecra 8100 which gets very hot as well, so it's not a real big difference to me.

Seems like you can't get everything you positively want in a notebook. One model is always missing some functionality that you want.
I chose the 600m because i need something with good battery life, but with good graphics and power. I don't game - usually just database ( oracle primarily )and web development ( PHP, MySQL, Apache ). I opted for the dothan 1.8, sxga/64meg and ordered 1gig ram from crucial . I don't need a big widescreen 15+ inch screen, my current ibm t30 and toshiba tecra both have 14". I am concerned about the heat, but i bought the accidental on it, so if it melts in 3yr then i can get a replacement.
My IBM T30 runs cool, quiet and quick - but i spilled a small amount of liquid on the touchpad and POOF => gone! mobo fried! So you never know....
My only other concern is the ability to run Linux on the 600m ( which the IBM runs flawlessly ) - but I can always throw cygwin or something on it until I can look into it more.
So...the heat issue was the lesser of all evils for me.
Glad to hear that you really enjoy and recommend the 600m - it took me a while to decide.

I have a dell 8600 (I know, it's not exactly the same, but bear with me.) The area just below the memory gets scalding hot at times. i normally don't notice, my pants provide some insulation, but when i put my hand there, it literally feels like my fingers are burning. The 600m has its RAM positioned the same way, so it will likely have the same effect. considering its more compact design, i may even be amplified.

    128mb radeon 9600PRO TURBO
    512mb RAM

Thanks Andrew, when i get the 600m i'll try to remember to report back. Since i got 2 sticks of 512 for it, i wonder if that will make it better .. or worse...

In normal usuage such as surfin the net, downloading stuff, lookin at pics the temp usually stays around 40-45C for the HD and 30-35 for the CPU. During games and such the temp rises 5-10C. The left palm dosent get "that hot" as some make it out to be, but you can notice the HD's rise in temperature. I dont think theres much you can do about it execpt get one of those coolin pad things like this

got my 600m today and reformatted the drive, installed the ram etc etc. I'm still reinstalling + svc packs now 5 hours later. I've been checking the heat and it's not too bad - but the area above the HD ( left palm ) is noticably the warmest area along with the ram area.
Overall i'm pretty happy with the new laptop, its very quiet and doesn't blow hot air like my older Toshiba. The screen absolutely blows away my IBM T30 TFT screen. I have a nice 17" LCD screen that has a good contrast ratio and is very bright. This Dell screen is very comparable to it when they are side by side.
i'm installing office updates right now and the machine is not really being taxed, i'm pretty impressed with how fast everything was installed and the Dell drivers went on without a hitch.
I didn't want to get into a review here, but i'm lying down and have the machine on me and it's not bad at all for heat.
    good little machine
