    I'm thinking about picking up a 1720 (2.4 ghz C2D, 320 gig HD, 8600 GT) for cheap with a coupon, but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger because I'm not sure if the 8600's are coming with DDR2 or DDR3 memory. I'm not getting a notebook with anything less than an 8600GT with DDR3, so it would be a real nasty surprise to open the box once I get it and see I made a mistake. Any 1720 users out there who can help me?

    DDR2 but that makes it more affordable as well.

    I thought that the 8600M GT is GDDR3?

    Unless its a different 8600M GT in the m1530, because the m1530's 8600m GT is GDDR3..

    Apparently it is. As far as I know, the 8600GT has come in 256 mb DDR2, 512 mb DDR2, and 256 mb DDR3. Kinda makes researching laptops a hassle, which is why I've also spent a lot of time looking at laptops with the ATI 3650, not as much confusion.

    M1530 = 256 MB GDDR3

    Inspiron 1720/1520(if you find one)/ Vostro 1500 = 8600M GT DDR2

    New MBP = 512 MB GDDR3 (doesn't really matter though).

    Wah, MBP is 512 MB!? X_X

    If dell could include the 512MB version.... it would be leading the MBP in price and in power too.

    Why would M1530 want 512mb? Don't forget, The system ram is SHARED. So, Video card can tap into system memory for more memory. 256mb is good enough for dedicate memory, Just my opinion.

    Yeah it comes with DDR2. I admit, I expected it to be at least GDDR3 especially for a 17" laptop... But hey, with the right overclocking and cooling techniques you should be able to game on Crysis at low-medium settings without problems. I did mine and it seems quite ok, my highest temps are at 60 degrees.

    Once again people, I see numerous similiar threads like these all the time... :) Perhaps this guide will help you out...
