I've noticed a few times when my laptop is running and it experiences a sudden jolt, the hard drive and DVD drive seem to spin down. Is this part of some shock detection feature, or am I harming the drives?

Well, the optical drive(if there is a moving disc in it of course) and the HD are both physical moving objects, so sudden movements(like falling off a table) can harm it. I believe all 2.5" mobile HDs have a shock absorption device in it to help prevent(note, help not prevent) potential falls and to save the HD.

What types of 'jolts' is it anyways?

I know the Sony SZ series has a special feature (that is unique to Sony VAIO's, or was when it came out?) which will spin down the HDD when it senses too much sudden tilt. This sounds very smart to me, but let's just hurry up and all switch to SSD already! :D
