Does the current Dell Studio lineup support 1080p/5.1 output over HDMI?

If I have a 1080p/5.1 source on my laptop (BD, .mkv, etc.), will I be able to output that signal via the HDMI port?

I've read about some laptops only supporting HDMI video/not supporting HD resolution output/HDCP issues and just want to confirm that the Studio is capable of this.

    Thanks :)

HDMI audio and video both work just fine with my 1555. I don't know about 5.1 though (I only use stereo)

Thanks. Upon further research it appears the 1555 utilizes HDMI 1.2 (5.1) and the 1557 utilizes HDMI 1.3 (7.1).

Will probably spring for the 1557 soon.

Is this software or hardware specific like USB 1.0 and 2.0?

HDMI 1.x refers to hardware, similar to USB 1.0 vs 2.0. The HDMI connectors on the 1555 are 1.2, while on the 1557 it seems they've been upgraded to 1.3.

However...I'm also reading that out of the box, the Studio can't output a 1080p/5.1 signal. It seems like it requires some 3rd party driver workarounds (i.e. using AC3Filter and spdif)

Hmm Yes I thought software could be involved but why would it not come with the HDMI drivers? Since I have no use for it now I have not read all the way through this.
