Wait for Nehalem, it should be out in a year or so.

ok guys, update, don't buy a notebook in a year, wait for the ultra thin holographic notebooks due out in 2020. kthxnbai hehehehe
-
I'll have 2 laptops between now and then, don't tell me to not buy now <_<
-

does it come in teal?
-
yeah uhh... What if I need a laptop now?
-
no I think they're see-through.
-
Hes joking.
Theres absolutely no way hes being serious.
A year or so....your a funny guy. -
I could this, or an M1330. About the same time...
-
I saw a commercial for the PS9. It apparently uses magic nose-burrowing molecules that tunnel into your brain and interface directly. Im waiting for that.
-
you guys are all stupid, i'm just gonna save my money and not buy anything because nothing will never become obsolete.
-
Such is technology. In a few months time, the next Santa Rosa chipset processor, Penryn will be released.
Pretty much good luck trying to catch up to technology, it ain't gonna happen, and if it is, your wallet won't like it.
Buy it when you absolutely need it, simple as that. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
I am waiting till at least Penryn, Nehalem is too far away.
-
I bought a new laptop. And I didn't even wait for Santa Rosa even though I would have gotten a better deal... damn Vostro.
-
summer of 2008 is a long time to wait for a new processor
-
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
Bah! Just sell your older one, and buy another when you need it. No point waiting.
-

But "good things come to those who wait".... -
Fall of 2008?
So that's before school next year?
How about Montevina? What is that?
I heard it's going to be released second quarter of 2008. -
Well I'm not buying a Nehalem, because when those are released in under a year from then there will be 40 core processors, and I'll just wait for those.
Or wait a second, when the 40 core processors come out the Quantum ones about 6 months after that - so I'll stick with my Commodore 64 until then -
Just gotta buy what you need, keep it for as long as you can. Trying to keep up with computer tech doesn't work well unless you got deep, deep pockets. -
-
No thanks. I can't wait until the 2nd half of 2008. Santa Rosa came out May 9th. Look how long it took for the M1330 to come out and then look how long people are waiting for their XPS M1330s. Mine isn't estimated to show up until 9/11 - 9/13.
My laptop (fortunately, not my only machine) is a creaky Dell Inspiron 4000 800 mhz Celeron from October 2001. -

But people who have a post 2003 notebook, can probably afford to wait another year for Nehalem -
Looks cool. But this is my first notebook, and I can't stand to wait another day.
-
Even when this Nehalem comes out, how much will it cost?

based on what information?
-
I just bought an ASUS G1s. I won't be looking for my next computer for at least 3 years, maybe longer if Microshaft doesn't have a decent OS out by then.

nehalem is a processor. just cuz notebook prices gradually dropped doesnt mean the processor will too. also, have you seen the projected retail prices of the core 2 extreme processors for notebooks? its already as high as $380. and if nehalem's so much better, i doubt it will be cheaper.
-
Btw "nehalem" doesn't sound right , its close to "nehalim" which means a stream , just like "banias" which is a name of a stream .
Anyway unless they improve on battery life and heating I don't see reason to wait for faster cpus then todays core 2 duo -- surfing for *orn won't be faste with 8xcore -
Well...it might be a year before I get my 1720 at the rate things are going! LOL
-
There will always be something bigger and better out soon
-
Haha, this is great advice.
But then why not wait for the die shrink of Nehalem?
Or perhaps wait for biological quantum CPUs that can evolve on their own. No obsolescence then.
EDIT: Okay, perhaps I should qualify my statements so I don't sound like a complete jerk.
I'm of the mentality of 'buy it when you need it'; however I'm also for opportunistic purchases of computer hardware. Say your purchasing time frame is July-August, but you know in September something new will be launched. Then is makes sense both technologically and financially to wait that extra little bit, if not to purchase the new product, but at least to purchase whatever it is you were going to at a lower price.
But to say, '1.5 years from now, a new product will be launched so wait for it' is nonsensical. With that mentality you'll buy nothing. -
First 8 cores from nehalem will barely do anything to 90% of users, just check the foruns and you will see a lot of people complaining of buying the santa rosa 7300, saying there is no difference for most users between 2.0ghz and 1.6ghz....
So for 90% of people your advice is pretty useless.
And for games then (aprox. 9%). Well acording to many sources more then 4 cores CANNOT be used for games. NAd even 4 cores is stretching imagination of programers. MOst programers say that 2 cores is ideal for gamming. But iuf you want a future proof gaming machine buy an Xbox 360. lol
So what about the last 1%... well these are high demanding users with graphical and multitask demands.. wich really should be looking for a deskltop and not a notebook for their tasks.
Conclusion: your advice is only useble for 1% (top).
(PS: in early 2009 there will be a new OS, better then vista, so when you decide to buy in mid 2008 you will end waiting till 2009, buit then in late 2009 the new intel processors will come, so will end a little bit more, and then you will indefinetely wait and never buy...) -
I like my abacus....
-
So the next batch of Core 2 Duo processors will come out second quarter next year right?
Around what month is that? -
Order in Fall 2008, and Dell might ship it by Spring 2009...
-
Have you heard about this laptop? It should be released soon, by Osbourne. Code name "Vixen"
4 MHz Zilog Z80 microprocessor, with 64 KB DRAM. 7-inch diagonal amber display that can show 24 lines by 80 columns of memory mapped video! Two400 KB disk drives, utilizing double-density double-sided 5.25" diskettes! And just 18 lbs.
Comes with WordStar, SuperCalc, MBasic. Runs CPM 2.2
$1298, unless you want a 10Mb HD, then its $1498
Just wait a little longer. -
lol
-
64 KB Dram - more memory than you'll every need!
-
wow
did OP get OWNED or what? -
Don't bother buying a new laptop... The Rapture is coming!
-
Seriously, when are the new chips/processor updates coming out?
-
A rough timeline would be:
Santa Rosa platform, Merom Chipset(current): Q1 2007
Santa Rosa platform, Penryn Chipset: Q4 2007
Montevina platform, Penryn Chipset: Q2 2008
Montevina platform, Nehalem Chipset: Q4 2008
However, who knows... -
The above mentioned architecture will atleast take more than 5 years to adopt itself in mainstream computing.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
I'm getting a Merom and then, most likely a Sandy hill computer -
Of course, those aren't official dates or timelines as Intel can full a fast one and completely rearrange and add something.
But the general situation is that there are at least 2 processor 'upgrades' per year, unfortunately -
You guys are forgeting to mention that by 2010 the intel CPU´s should start coming with an embeded GPU, AMD is planing on doing it by end 09.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Embeded? What? Does that mean like a 7300 could have an 8600 GT in it or something (But with the future processor and video card)
