So it was running fine this morning after i had just downloaded the upgraded firmware from the dell site.

Now speeds from fileplanet which are usually 170kbs steady have hit 800bps max around 80kbs. what is wrong?

Well, broadband speeds are always under flux unless you have a dedicated line. I doubt you do...only large industries, schools and Bill Gates have this. Expect higher traffic in the midday, and less so in the evenings, corresponding to an inverse relationship in speed. (i.e, more traffic, slower downloads, and vice-versa)

any particular reason why you would update the firmware?

As for torrents, what program are you using and how many peers are you downloading from and whats your dl rat e for torrents.

i don't have a dedicated line but DL speeds with fileplanet are always 170kbs and never fall.

    I'm using Utorrent.

I'm getting 6kbs. Pretty medicore considering i used to get 120kb and up.

I have no idea why i updated. they said it was recommended.

AFAIK, the only firmware updates are for DVD drives and BIOS flashes. Everything else is a driver or software update. That being said, exactly what laptop do you have, what hardware do you have in that laptop, and what update did you download and install?

I'm not a mind reader, so I need more than just "4.100.15.8" and that you have an e1705. I'd wager the components in my 1705 differ quite a bit from yours.

The e1705 downloads section has quite a bit on it that doesn't apply to your computer. For instance, if you have the Intel 3945A/B/G, you wouldn't install the Dell Wireless update, you'd need the Intel 3945 update.

@Gautam -- you have that reversed. The speed tends to slow down in the evening because everyone is coming home and using their connection. It is usually quick during the day.

@Zmanattack -- a good way to increase torrent speed is to forward the port that is used for incoming connections. Check out worldofwarcraft.com for which ports you need to forward.... and yes. They use a bittorrent client.
