If, say, I have a download that won't finish for another 2-3 hours and I won't be using the notebook (a XPS m1530) for this time, what can I do to conserve the battery life? (ie. do sleep/hibernate/etc. allow the download to keep going?)
Also, when the notebook's battery has been fully charged, should I remove the AC adapter and continue with my work or should I keep the AC adapter plugged in and continue with my work? (Which will help the battery last longer?)

for the battery thing, if u know u wont be away from the adapter for a long time, remove the battery and store it, running the laptop on adapter(but becareful about it...)
think its just eaiser t o keep the battery in its slot in AC adapter -
Try to avoid having the battery pack in while the laptop is plugged in. Charge it to 100%, then pull it out. This will help prolong your batteries "lifespan".
As for the download, if it needs to download, it needs to stay ON. Once the computer goes into sleep/hibernate, the download will stop. -
I'm not willing to go as far as pulling the battery in and out once charging is done/necessary as I find it a little too irritating. If I wish to leave my battery in the laptop at all times, would it be better to remove the AC adapter or keep the AC adapter in, when the battery is fully charged?

honestly, all that work will NOT save THAT much of yur battery's life. as long as u dont leave it plugged in 24/7 for weeks/months at a time. try to move around a little bit and let the system operate under its own battery ever so often. it'll get u off yur butt and it'll help the batteries life.
and if u'r usin firefox, u can pause and resume downloads can't u?
