I received my Inspiron 17R 5720 on 15th and set about downloading and burning the System Recovery Discs.

The first disc took some 45 mins (including ejecting the disc and asking for it to be re-loaded for verification?) and then finally said there was an error and kept the disc in the tray.

Had to initiate another download cycle to get the disc out. Closed the PC down and as it did an error message flashed on the screen.

On re-booting it went to a Boot Mode and after doing a Diagnostics it displayed error 2000-0332 video card memory error. It has stayed in the Boot Mode since.

As a new unit I have requested a new PC which they are going to do but what I would like to know is this a known problem when trying to burn the System Recovery Discs? Are they linked or unfortunate separate problems?

How long should it take to burn a disc, 4 require in all, and are errors common when trying to do this as I will have to go through this process again when I receive the replacement PC which I am now a bit apprehensive about?

Dell UK simply won't send a set of Recovery Discs for free and wan't to charge for them which I am not happy to pay for, particularly after the problems I have experienced.

    Hey Rudge,

This issue has been noted by Dell. Could you run all the Windows updates before creating the recovery DVD? Please let me know if this resolves the error. I can then let our engineers know if this works or not.

    Hi

Your reply is a bit late as the laptop was sent back for a replacement immediately after the problem was experienced on the 18th Feb.

However, are you saying that you should run ALL Windows updates before attempting to download and burn System Recovery Discs?

I think that isn't the problem here it sounds more like a hardware failure and one doesn't need to Windows update to do system recovery discs-never had to do a Windows update to just make recovery discs especially if the image is on the partition already.

I think that small charge you pay would more benefit you then you think. The problem is a Dell hardware failure and they should fix that free of charge but recovery cd/dvd would be a worth while price one should pay for piece of mind and to restore should they need to in the future. But since you don't mention how much they are asking that is hard to know the cost for the recovery disc.

    Thanks for the replies.

After a second 17 R failed out of the box I have now replaced it with a 17 R SE, which seems to be OK at the moment, as they gave me a bit more discount as compensation.

I did ask for a recover disc which they have agreed to send FOC, which I am still waiting for.

However, I thought I may as well burn a set as well only to find that once again that it comes up with an error, not the 2000-0332 again thankfully, but clearly there is a problem burning the recovery disc as there seem to be several people having the same problem on the forum.

This is something that Dell clearly need to sort out quickly.
