I just got my e1505 today and I'm following SouthernGirl's guide.

I copied over the c:\drivers file and have the Dell CD. It was actually tough because a lot of drivers still needed installed and you have to guess what folder they're in if you use c:\drivers.

Also, the CD doesn't list the e1505. Nothing even close actually.

Anyway, my main question at this point: I have 2 devices w/ out drivers and I don't know what the devices are and I can't get Windows to find any drivers.

    They are:
PCI Device - Location: PCI bus 0, device 27, function 0
SM Bus Controller - Location: PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3

Any advice? I'm lost. I suppose if I don't know what they are I don't need drivers *that* bad.

"PCI Device - Location: PCI bus 0, device 27, function 0
SM Bus Controller - Location: PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3"

This is for your Intel Chipset, find the Intel Drivers on your CD to fix this, the one driver will fix what your calling 2 device problems.

I believe I read somewhere on this board, that the E1505 is actually formerly known under a different model name, but it's the same system.

Inspiron 9400, 6400 or E1705 drivers should all work if you can find a folder on the CD for any of those models, just use the same Intel drivers.

Hey, awesome. That fixed. Now all I have left of the ugly yellow exclamations is this:

Under USB controllers I have 5 Intel USB controllers listed and then 5 "USB Root Hub" listings with yellow uglies.

Are those last 5 redundant and can be removed or is there some kind of driver I should have for them?

    Thanks!

    Pleasure to of helped.

I'm thinking those drivers should have loaded when you installed the Intel Chipset Drivers, are there more Intel Drivers on that CD you have? If so, those are what you need to fix this, and to answer your other question, no they are not redundant, each one listed is for each of your USB ports, I'm guessing you must have 4 on that model, and the 5th is for the flash memory card reader showing up as a USB device I believe (sorry it's been a while).

I have more info for you as well I'll type after I send this.

Your going to want to go through all those devices and update the drivers (a pain, but it needs to be done to get the most out of your system and be up to date).

That means identifying ever piece of hardware by model and manufacturer if possible, then taking a visit to each ones web site to download the latest version of their driver for that piece of hardware unless you can find a newer driver for the device on Dells website (the name of the driver file or version number will usually tell you which one is newer, most also have release dates listed by the download link).

The reason why is, even if you had all the drivers available from that CD when you installed Windows again, Windows will by default install it's own drivers if the drivers on the CD aren't signed by Microsoft. Since this was a ploy for Microsoft to squeeze additional money out of other companies most didn't play along with Microsofts game and pay money to have their drivers "signed". Some of these Windows drivers will be either generic, or several (4-6) years old. You won't see the yellow exclamation point for them, and the hardware will work, but bug fixes and additional features are usualy available in newer driver releases so it's worth the little bit of leg work to find the newer drivers and install them even if Windows wants to put up a fuss about them not being "Signed".

As far as the USB issue goes, if you can't find those Intel drivers on the CD, they should be there though, you can look at Intels site for them, I'm not sure which chipset you have, guessing the Intel 945GM (if you have the Intel Graphics) or the 945PM (if you went with the ATI Graphics option).

Intel's site is fairly easy to use, for example, here's the drivers (and Intel Video Drivers for the 945GM)...

    http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-022034.htm

If your not sure which Intel Chipset you have, Intel has a program you can download and run to properly identify it here...

    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009266.htm

You can also search their web site for the USB drivers you want.

A good sign you were given the wrong CD for your system. If you are in Windows and install a 'correct' CD it will automatically detect which Dell model you have and go straight to a page listing the proper devices. If you were presented a drop-down menu with a list of models, then the odds are you don't have the correct media.

If you do end up with the correct CD at some point, don't be surprised if it displays an 'engineering' name for your computer. My E1505 was displayed as a MM061 [matches what I see in the BIOS Dell Logo splash screen].

Unfortunately something seems 'amiss' here. I just did a Windows reinstall and w/o doing the Dell Drivers install, those items were already 'good' [no yellow 'bangs']. And yes... I have 5 x 5 just like you do

    The drivers are listed as Microsoft drivers [e.g. usbehci.sys usbhub.sys usbport.sys hccoin.dll usbui.dll usbd.sys]

Anything odd wrt your Windows reinstall????

    Eastander,

I had the same issue with my Dell Vostro 200, Other Devices - PCI Devices PCI bus 0, device 27, function 0. I found another post about checking to make sure I had sound. I didn't. So I loaded the Dell Driver CD and installed the only Audio Driver that was on the CD. It didn't have a check mark, I have no idea why, maybe because the driver was for 5.1 sound and I didn't oder this support for my PC.

After I installed the Audio Driver, viola, the PCI Device error with ! went away!!! Hope this works for you :) :)
