Can anyone tell me for definite if the above hard-drive from an Inspiron is dual-layer? I'm fairly sure it is but need confirmation. Thanks

I say yes because I have a dual layer drive in my Dell Vostro 1500 device manager looks like this:

    PBDS DVD+-RW DS-8W1P

The key is DVD+R which means dual layer. :)

To my knowledge +R does not necessarily mean dual layer as I have some older +R drives that are NOT.

No +R just means the side it copies on (+ or - or both). Sometimes it says DL for Dual Layer but not most of the time. Through googling it appears to be, but I'm not 100% sure so I thought I would ask

If you are referencing your XPS laptop in your sig then there is a 100% chance its a dual layer drive. Dell rarely configures their laptops with standard DVD drives. The last laptop I purchased that used a non dual layer drive was the Vostro 1000 which relied on older tech parts.

Pretty much every Dell laptop today use dual layer drives since they are so cheap.
