I have an external monitor hooked up to my dell 1420 laptop with integrated graphics. I have it configured as an extended desktop with the laptop being the primary monitor and to the left of the external. However, everytime I go into standby and come out of standby the settings change and I have to set them back. How can I get them to stick?

Yeah standby screws with it I'm not sure why. To stop it happening I used to just stop using standby. And either have it on or hibernate it if I'm not using it for an extended period of time. Because when its plugged into an external monitor you will normally be plugged into power so standby is fairly pointless anyways.

So do you have it set to do nothing on lid close? Is it bad to have the lid closed when its still on though?

If you go into standby before you close the lid it seems to be fine. Is there a shortcut to go into standby. I thought it was Fn+F1 but that might have been only under Vista.
