When using an external monitor with an Inspiron/Vostro laptop, can the lid be closed without having the laptop go into standy mode/shutdown?

Is this setting configured within the Windows power saving options or something?

I know this is a dumb question but thanks for the help!

this can be set via the power options settings of vista... right click on the battery meter in the taskbar, and select power options.. then on the left side, there's an option what regarding when closing the lid... hope this helps...

Yup, korn hit on the head. It gives you the option to shut down, hibernate, sleep and do nothing.

Although, do note you're notebook will overheat!..

I've shut mine before and left it to download, came back to a very warm machine 8(

Any ideas why my screen doesn't turn off when I shut the lid in XP? It did in Vista...but...that's Vista.

Edit: And yeah, they do get a little warmer then usual when the lid is closed, but it should be fine. Don't sue me if your laptop explodes because you closed the lid though.

Also, since the wireless antennas are in the lid, you probably wont get as good reception as if it were on. I can't connect to distant-dorm wireless when it's closed. BUT it does look cooler.

I had that issue but it mysteriously disappeared. I think it happened when I changed something to automatically use my external monitor if its connected when the lid closes. I think it's something in QuickSet or a registry value for "LidShutdown" or "LidClose" or something, sorry I can't be more specific.
