Hello - I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 and the power adapter/cord recently went bad. I think the battery is also dead. My question is, if I buy just a new adapter & cord will the computer run on that alone or do I have to have a new battery as well? Thanks for your help.

You can run on just an AC adapter, absolutely. In fact, if you don't use your battery very often, it's better for your battery to take it out of the computer whenever you aren't using it.

You need a new battery only if you wanna use your notebook on battery...

Thank you! I rarely use the laptop without the adapter so I'll go ahead and remove the battery. Like I said, I think it's done anyway! Batteries are SO expensive - I was shocked when I checked in to buying a new one. Frustrating.
