Do I have to use and order the XP restore disk for my inspiron 6400? Or can I just use an original copy (not-OEM) to re-install the OS?

Also, when I need to re-install all the drivers, does the dell resource disk install all? Do I have to boot from this disk, or can it do it from windows once I re-install the OS?

When you need to reinstall all the drivers, first install the modem/wireless drivers on the Dell resource disk so you can connect to the internet. From there, get all your drivers from Dell.com as they probably have newer ones on their website. Typically, they have all the drivers on the disc but there is no one button as far as I know that says "hook this computer up", you usually install 1 by 1. To use the disk, simply pop it in and go to it from the desktop, no need to boot from it.

Yes, you can use any legit installation disk, it need not necessarily be the OEM one.

What OS did your system ship with? XP or Vista? The dell disk would have drivers specific for the OS. but intially when u install the OS, windows drivers would do the job and u can get the others or update them later.. though check out the sata/ahci driver details and requirements...

You would have to get the other' by yourself (there are lots of threads with driver links here in NBR!!)

Btw, can you get your question a bit more clear?? and more specific may be?

No, you can use any XP disk, just make sure you use the product key on the bottom of the notebook during the setup process.

When it's time to reinstall drivers, just put the resource CD in after Windows installation is complete, It will want to scan your system and will display only the drivers that apply to your configuration.

It's important that you install the drivers in the correct order:

    1. Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software

    2. Chipset or SMBus driver

    3. Processor Driver (if applicable)

    4. Video

    5. Audio (sound)

    6. Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)

    7. Modem

    8. Network Card/Wireless

It's also important to then go online and download the latest versions of the drivers from Dell. (just make sure your security software is set up first ;) )

EDIT: LOL, I♥RAM beat me to it :D

This is better advice, I typically like to install only the newest versions of the driver at ever reinstall, but for you this will work just as good.
