The reason I ask is because the vostro says 'truelife' but the 1520's say 'glossy'. Is it two words for the same thing?

I'm pretty sure the vostro has a matte screen, but don't quote me on that

What about anti-reflection coatings - do some glossy screens have them and others not?

    To shlurpee:

    I got my D630 with a matte screen at 14400 x 900. I think that's pretty hi-res.

    To Nalada:

My friend ordered an Inspiron with anti-reflection coating. This is misleading and false advertising. In fact, i believe this "anti-glare" coating gives the screen grain looks. To answer your question, the anti glare coating still gives off plenty of reflection. The screen is the most important part of any laptop. If you have not experience glossy screen before, go to a nearby Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, they're everywhere. If you like what you see (reflection from the overhead lights and the muppet sales men from behind you) then be my guess. I would avoid glossy screen at all costs. But don't take my words for it.

Wow - that is good! My D610 is only 1400x1050 ;-).
(I really like that resolution... in fact I am beginning to wish for more!)

I took a look at some Sony's at Zhonguancun and I have some reservations. I ordered the M1330 with LED screen so I am hoping the greater brightness helps make up for the reflections and otherwise I will just have to carefully position the machine with respect to light sources and where black clothes (maybe that is why all those white shirted businessmen need the matte screens). I was also wondering if the Dell will be less good than the Sony (e.g. I was wondering if Sony had an anti-reflection coating and not the Dell).
On the other hand, a camera lens type of anti-reflection coating would perhaps be a fingerprint magnet and could be easily damaged by screen cleaning. Then there are the aftermarket screen protectors - now I wouldn't be surprised if they created that grain effect.

I wouldn't buy any after-market screen protectors. They will probably leave behind some kinda of residue. Nor would i buy any cleaning solutions at Fry's. I realized in the end the most effective/safe cleaning solution for any monitor screen is.... purified water. Don't trust those expensive cleaning solutions at the store, they'll probably make your screen "oily".

    - Again, you want comfort when using your laptop, you should choose a laptop that works around you, and not the other way around. You wouldn't want to constantly adjust the laptop just because there's reflection. My sister has a Compaq with glossy screen, and it ticks me off every time i use it. But i have to admit the colors/contrast is better. Some muppet in my summer class has an inspiron with glossy screen at max brightness (!) and i still see his ugly mug even when i'm sitting 2 tables away from him (7 ft). Even at this distance, the brightness from the screen hurts my eyes. I don't know he handles it. Amazing guy....

I can assure you that glossy screens are annoying, and will eventually tick you off. I speak from experience.
