Well, it appears the rumors were true. I noticed this morning the T2600 CPU option is now $375. It was at $500 yesterday when I ordered my M1710.

I have a call in to my rep to deal with the price drop.

If you have been holding on buying that new lappie, now is the time.

Isnt it better to wait another month or two for Merom, which is supposedly 30% better in performance and priced similar to Yonah.

If you want to wait and dont need it - sure. I see it like this: When Mer is finally released I'm betting the prices will be just as high if not higher than where they were with Yonah.

Yonah is powerful enough and will have no trouble dealing with Vista (provided you have the right GPU, etc).

Upgrade to Mer when its cheaper. Just my 2 cents.

Jeez, Merom will be released in August but god knows how long it'll take to actually end up in laptops.

    Batboy,

I agree...I have been kicking myself for not waiting the extra month to get a core duo, but when they came out they were out of my price range...so in essence I made out not waiting.

But what you are saying I can totally see...if you can wait and pay the extra money, by all means do. But I am sure my comp will be Vista compatable except for the DX10 video cards. :( Which I haven't seen yet.

I will definently be getting a new computer...desktop or laptop when Merom comes out or a little after. :p

actually merom will arrive at the same price, ie the same speed (in GHz) merom will be at the same price as yonah after the price cuts of this week. Just thought I would note that.

on the other hand I believe the intel quote on performance improvement was more like 20%. But going by how much I trust intel's estimate, I'll say 5%. I believe that the 20% is more realistic after the release of the Santa Rosa and the 800FSB morem. But that is a long long way away, about one year, and tons happens in the tech world in such time!

    My 2 cents :D

One can only hope this is the case. With the way Dell prices work, lol - could be $800 for a mer...

I was refering to intel's pricing. You're right the way manufacturers price is completely a different story.

I've seen at times difference between different CPU options of about 2 times (or more) as much as intel's official prices.

Dont make the same mistake as i did with my 8204 and buy something thats worth maybe about $500 less. I paid $2700 CAD and in about 2-3 days i noticed that there was the exact same lappie for 2200 CAD in a different store...
It really can be worth waiting sometimes. Unfortunately with the current confusing situation (merom, Vista, DX10 support... etc) one can end up waiting for ever.

i saw 30% improvement figure mentioned somewhere may be got the intel figures mixed up, as for release date and pricing with Merom release date coinciding back to school period. i would think intel & dell will be pushing them out in that period priced similar to duo's.

so with merom maybe going to be dropping in price lets says, next year and with the release of santa rosa, should we/I just get like cheap $500 laptops now to last us a year or two and then get new ones w/ merom+santa rosa ? would it be worth it? Because when merom is released in August it will probably be around october or november before they are even in laptops and i need one for school.

Also, If i am not mistaken ( which i am a lot), vista will not be compatible with any laptops made now without a GPU that is capable of utilizing DX10? And since changing GPU's on laptops isn't always an option.......
But i personally won't switch to vista for about 2-4 years after it's released so they get all the initial kinks and bugs out of it.

they are next biggest things with merom

The reason i got my M1710, was the fact i had a M170 that couldnt be upgaded.

With my m1710, i can do merom, and possibly DX10

so just remember that merom could a option for yonah users now

Windows Vista will be able to run on any current machine that has been marked with a "Windows Vista Capable" sticker. Windows Vista will be able to run to its full potential on any computer that is a "Windows Vista Premium" computer.
If you go to Microsoft's site and check out the "Windows Vista" homepage, you will be able to find any information concerning the hardware requirements or, in fact, anything else about the OS. Its quite usefull. :D

i think they are tweaking the shaders a little bit and "unifying" the drivers for all video card makers or something like that...

IIRC, Dell was one of the first if not the first with the Core Duo, and that was almost simultaneous with Yonah's official release. When you buy in the quantities that Dell does, you get good service from your suppliers. [IMG]

WRT performance, Meroms are smashing records, albeit on desktop systems with supercooling:

    Fun with Merom.

The current record for SuperPi 1M on Merom: ~14 sec! Yes, this is with supercooling, but a P4 at 7GHz+ couldn't come anywhere near that. So yes, Meroms are sick. They are essentially low-wattage Conroes, and clock-for-clock, nothing even comes close.

My question is not what the price of these will be, but will Dell still offer the $750-off deals once these Meroms are shipping? Or is Dell using that pricing to clear out Yonah inventory in anticipation of Merom?

you have any success on making them lowering the price ?(from date you ordered)

I noticed my E1705 is about 250 less than when I ordered 10 days ago.

curious to know if anyone got them to credit back $ to reflect new lowered prices. If you got them to, was it smooth and easy ? or a lot of call back n retry ?

nope - for me it wasnt a big deal. I called up my sales rep and mentioned i noticed the prices dropped since placing the order on the first. I asked her to credit me the difference and she said she would call me back in 10 minutes. She called back and it was a done deal.

Keep in mind, I ordered the day before the price drops - I don't know how a longer time frame will play into it. I'm going to hazzard a guess and say if it was more than a few days you are probably out of luck.

Just keep calling back and see where that leads.
