For example...I was trying to re-install WoW today, and disc one worked fine. Disc two, however, struggled to spin up, and the drive was grinding like a madman. It did manage to spin up and install fine, but disc 3 just spun, then grinded, then spun, then grinded, etc.

To me, it sounds like the lens mechanism is slipping or something on the guide screw. It was an issue that I had months ago, but seemed to resolve itself. But I had to do a wipe and fresh install of XP and the problem is back in full force.

I haven't tried the new firmware for my drive that's on Dell's site, but that didn't seem to help last time either. It's a Phillips SDVD8820, btw.

If nobody knows what may be wrong, I may just suck it up and buy an external drive.

It's happened to me as well, once or twice.

Try cleaning the lens of the DVD-reader, use a Q-tip. It doesn't have to be wet or anything.

The lens will naturally accumulate dust after a while, and sometimes fingerprints as well if you use it a lot.
