Any free software I could use to set the dvd and cd read speed? The vibration is really unbearable
And if possible, can u edit the firmware to limit the read speed so I donnt have to have another porcess running in the background.

the vibratons are more than likely due to the fact the CD/DVD was not proberly seated on the spindle and/or the laptop is on an uneven surface.
at least that was what was wrong with the dell laptops I've delt with from the Inspiron line.

if not, then the best of luck in finding a solution.

They spin pretty darn fast. It could just be that the cd itself is slightly uneven.

Software: Nero Drivespeed, or Plextools? (this is from a quick google search)

Or third, and it is possibly but unlikely, you have a bad drive. If NONE of the other options work, call Dell and get another drive. But I would say that's a last resort.

My vote goes to uneven media. I've had that a lot in the past. Label just slightly off, or a CD cut just a little uneven. It sucks when you get those.

its not a bad drive, that is for sure. just very badly designed, any way to modify the firmware to slow down the drive?

maybe something in BIOS but it's a longshot and I wouldn't know where to look.
