When we first received the e1505 the speed step would slow down the cpu speed from 1.66ghz to 900mhz when the cpu was idle. But now it is always running at 1.66ghz even when the cpu is idle. I checked the bios to see if something changed but is says speed step is enabled. I also checked power options and properties and its set to "Portable/Laptop".

Could 1 of the recent microsoft updates borked up speed step? I would like to have it working again to save battery life. Anyone have any ideas as to what has went wrong to cause speedstep to stop working

Did you just do a microsoft update lately?

It sounds like its possible that might be what caused it, especially if you state that all the settings are correct and nothing has changed.

Try getting a hold of Dell support via chat and ask them.

Not sure when the speed step stopped working? I just happened to notice recently that it was not stepping down even when the cpu usage is at 0%. The only thing we have installed on the E1505 recently is microsoft updates. If no one else has any ideas I'll give dell support a shout.

Ok, I chatted with dell support and they were no help. They gave me a link to reinstall the speed step driver but the driver would not install, some error came up. So I went to the dell support site, punched in my service tag, looked around for a speed step driver and saw none.
Then I noticed a bios update. I installed that, no change.

This is the strange part, I noticed when I plug in the power cord into the E1505 and using cpuz that the cpu would step down to a 6X multiplier and run at 900mhz? And when I would unplug the power cord the cpu would jump up to a 10x multiplier and run at 1.66ghz? WTF? Thats backwards.

So then for the heck of it changed the power scheme from "Laptop" to "Desktop" and now it works as it should? Now when the power cord is plugged into the laptop it always runs at 1.66ghz and when I unplug the cord and run on battery power it steps down to 900mhz. This has to be totally backwards, as I am on the "Desktop" power scheme. Can someone explain this one to me?

Do you have your computer switching power schemes when you unplug it??

Not sure? When I go to "power options properties" I have it set now to "Home/Office Desk" being thats the only way to get it to step down when the power cord is unplugged in. Totally backwards? I checked when the cord is plugged in or on battery it stays at "home/Office Desk". If I change the power scheme to "portable/laptop" every thing works in reverse?

I reformatted and reinstalled windows the day after I got the laptop. I'd rather not do it again if I don't have to.

I am having the same issue. The processor seems always to be running at full clock speed. and the fan runs more often than before. I thought it was bios problem so I downgraded from A07 to A03 but the problem won't go away.
