hi, a friend of mine brought her dell m640 / e1405 lappy over the other day and said she was having problems going online. i checked and from best I could tell, the broadcom integrated 440x ethernet was dead. I got no link light when I connected the cat5 cables, tried a few known-working cables to my known-working switch. wireless was acting up too, it would connect to my hotspot but was not able to DHCP and always got a 169.254. address and no surfing.

the lappy is just out of the 1yr warranty so I don't know what to tell her. I tried downloading the latest bcm440x driver update from Dell support and installed it, but it didn't fix the issue.

    any help? advice? thanks! :)

Doesn't sound good, but here are a few steps that may help save your friend some money.

Try disabling and re-enabling the network card, Windows loves to screw with networking.
If this doesn't work, try a Windows reload, while a pain in the a**, it will eliminate any chances of it being a software issue.

I tried also disabling/re-enabling the ethernet connection via the control panel. no dice. I also used netsh to "reset tcp-ip" by typing "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" from the command prompt and then rebooting which did also not fix the problem. looks like she's S.O.L for now. :(
