I'm getting the blue screen of death whenever I start my recently reformatted E1405. I'm getting this error as soon as Windows begins to load, even if I'm trying to reinstall Windows or boot in safe mode. Here's a timeline of events Prior to the Problem
1. Deleted all partitions (except for the Diagnostic).
2. Installed Windows MCE on 15GB Partiton.
3. Created an image, (stored on 60GB partition).
4. Set Fixed Pagefile Size (2048 MB)
5. Installed all drivers, Office 2003 & all critical Windows/Office Updates.
6. Installed TuneXP & enabled these tweaks.
7. Installed Nero 7 & PerfectDisk 7
8. Defrag'd w/ PerfectDisk & Scheduled Offline Defrag
9. Repaired MediaDirect
I repaired MediaDirect before the offline Defrag ever ran. The bluescreen has been appearing ever since I rebooted after repairing Media direct.
Here's what I've tried to resolve the situation:
1. Boot last working configuration & all safe modes.
2. Successfully restored 2 Ghost Images of Fresh Windows Installations
3. Disabling just about EVERYTHING in Bios.
4. Boot w/o any optical drive.
5. Boot w/ only Dell's RAM installed
6. Reinstall Windows MCE (blue screen after Windows begins to load).
7. Install Windows Vista Beta 2 (similar error in the graphical interface).
8. Renaming the last driver that loads when trying to boot in safe mode.
9. Reflashing bios in Dos.
Testing:
Dell Diagnostics (Extended) Test: 0 Errors
Memtest 86 (5 Passes) 0 Errors
The first time I ran the Dell Diagnostic Test, I had a CD in the drive & received this error: "0F00:131D / Msg Block: 716730 - Illegal Request - possible use of incorrect Media."
I was so stumped that I even resorted to chatting w/ Dell Hardware Support! The first guy told me the error might by a HDD error, so we ran the HardDrive test under diagnostics which returned 0 errors. He was supposed to call back to ask for the results, but never did. I contacted them again today & here's the shortened transcript:
Three times! That sounds like a guarantee! I'll try the "new" disk one it comes, but I'm doubtful. Does anybody else have any other ideas?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance.

Well, I'd give it a shot, but it sounds like you'll have to totally clear the partition and start over.

I'm with Jeffrey. I think you are probably going to have to start all over. Normally BSOD are caused by drivers, but if you can't even get into safe mode, then it could be something worse.

I've tried reinstalling Windows, & this is what happens:
1. Startup Computer
2. Insert OS Disk
3. Boot From CD/DVD
4. Windows installation starts to load drivers
5. Windows starting up... BSOD
The only thing I can think of is to remove the HDD, and reformat it on another system. -
There is definitely something wrong with the drive (software-wise). I connected it to my desktop as a slave & got the same error. I think the problem was caused by my reparing MediaDirect (since it's been happening on every bootup since then).
Anyway, Dell is sending out a replacement HDD. -
When you re-install on the new drive, I'd not even worry about MediaDirect. Is it worth that much hassle again if it doesn't install properly? I think not.

Hi, I had exactly the same problem. I deleted the Media Direct partition and it booted up fine.
