    Hi folks,

I have been using my new Inspiron E1405 for about a month w/o any problems. For the past couple of days, I am noticing that from the upper left side of the keyboard (near the CPU fan) a very weird high frequency noise being emitted.

As usual/typical, I googled and found out others having the same problem:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php?t-86439.html
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php?t-83622.html

I have tried all the solutions suggested in these threads, and none worked. Finally, I contacted Dell and their support person worked with me for like 2 hrs to figure out the issue (running tests etc.). Finally, she said that she would like to do system restore, and that is where I had to ask her to call me later because I want to back up my data before any kind of restore.

But even before I proceed for restore, I am curious to learn if anyone has found a fix? Note that, I also dual-boot this machine with Linux (Ubuntu Edgy) and I do not encounter this problem at all. This makes me wonder if it has something got to do with the OS?

Any ideas will be really appreciated. Thanks - Jyoti

If you have no trouble with ubuntu then it is quite possible that it's your OS. The only other thing that I can think of is that an internal fan is rubbing against something in the case, but I'm not familiar with the internal makeup of the e1405 so I can't verify this.

When you run Ubuntu, make sure that the fans are actually turning on. I know with my Inspiron e1505, and additional package is needed to run the fan, because they use an odd acpi config.

Yes, my fans are running well -- no worries on that aspect. I am still wondering what could Win XP Media Center mess up....
