Turn up the brightness setting on battery in your BIOS.

Reboot your system and tap F2 a few times at the Dell splash screen.

Or you can use the "Fn" and "Up" arrow key combination.

That doesn't work perfectly all the time. In some cases (like the Inspiron 1420, and apparently the E1405), there are separate brightness controls for battery and AC power in the BIOS, completely independent from the Fn+up/down controls.

Interesting... cause it's the same combination for my E1705.

The FN + Up arrow is a temporary brightness solution on the I1420 and E1405. If you want to have permanent results then you have to enter the BIOS.

Yeah, that only seems to be the case for certain Inspiron systems. With my Studio, for instance, the BIOS setting is changed when you use the Fn+up shortcut from within Windows.
