to make a long story as short as possible, i'm on my 2nd e1405 with a samsung panel from dell, and am running out of options... so i'd like to get some input from e1405/dell owners.

the "dirtiness/graininess/fuzziness" that people have posted about is definitely an issue... at least for me. it was actually worse on my first notebook, but i think its still something that would drive me nuts over time. anyway, i've also tried the route of getting an in home technician to come out and replace the panel (rather than getting a 3rd laptop), as that worked for some on the dell forums, but he showed up with a samsung panel. obviously the dell tech support people cant specify a panel choice, and they are even telling me that lg panels arent available (anymore?).

so what i'm looking for here is:

-have any recent e1405 purchasers (and i guess e1505/e1705) actually gotten lg panels? when did you order?

-if you have an lg panel in your (newer) dell notebook, does it truly not have these issues?

-if you have had a similar problem with a samsung panel, where you able to get it swapped out, and if so how/how long?

i'm on the verge of returning the whole thing and looking elsewhere... but at this point i dont really want to go through the whole buying decision/research process again.

    any input is appreciated.

I did not receive the Samsung OR LG LCD. I received trhe AUO LCD. I am pretty happy with it. Maybe you could suggest one of these for your next replacement. Hope this helps!

well i may just return the thing and start over anyway because of the current 30% off coupon + the vista coupons (the 30% + some other stuff brings the discount to well over $400). i hate to play the panel lottery AGAIN, but the more and more i shop around, the more the dell becomes the best fit for the cash (without doubling the price).

@pauly: when did you order/receive yours? can you confirm it has no problems like i'm describing with the samsung panel?

amking, I received my unit at the end of August, I am located in Canada, not the US. I do not notice the defects that you do, only some light leakage while watching movies and such.

schnikies79, first go to control panel, then click on system, then click on hardware, then click on device manager, then click on monitors, then right click on one of the options, and go to properties, then click on details. There you should see what brand of LCD you have.

    Hope this helps!

blah i really dont know what to do at this point D:

today i went to my local big box retailer and had a look at some of their notebooks (checking the panel manufacturer of each). its amazing how all the lg/auo/qds/etc screens (across the different brands) do NOT exhibit any of the issues i described with the samsung panels in my e1405's.

i am probably going to return the one i have now and look at something else... but i am VERY tempted by the current 30% coupon from dell. sad that (from what i've read), dell is moving towards only using the samsung panels :/

dell is trying to **** me over with a restocking fee + shipping... i'm not happy with this screen, what can i do?

edit: after getting bounced around the third person i spoke to with customer service met me half way waived the restocking fee, but i'll have to spend $20+ on shipping :/

just an FYI to anyone that comes across this thread or is considering an e1405: I just received my 3rd e1405 and it came with an lg panel!!!

i am very satisfied with the laptop for the money and am happy to report that the lg screen does not have the "screen door" effect or "splotches or dirty/fuzziness" that the samsung panels had.

My e1505 has a Samsung. After getting it replaced three times, I just gave up. You get used to it.

I actually had the LG at first, there was so graniness and it was good, but the viewing angles were horrible and gave my headachs.

I got Quanta LTD. matte screen and there's no grainess only light leackage which is hard to say because its might be caused by the viewing angles, but definatelly there's a light leackage. Its viewable only at black screen !
I havent seen Truelife on e1405 but i read on that forum that it cant be compared as 710m's screen which is Perfect according to me. I hate glare.
I dont know why everyone avoid matte screen?

Not everyone, speedking. I ordered mine with a matte screen too. Excessive glare would spoil my experience and I plan on taking this on the road and using it outside quite a bit too. I'll update which pannel I got when I receive it in about a week.

Mine says LPL. I'm assuming that stands for LG Phillips LCD (could be wrong about that). It's a WXGA with trulife and looks good, the only thing is when I scroll up and down the text kind of gets darker while it's scrolling, then it immediately goes back to normal. This is my first experience with a notebook and i've only had it for a week, so this might (and probably is) completely normal.

Are there more problems with the WXGA or WXGA+ ? Mines coming with the WXGA+ Truelife and now I'm starting to worry... If I have any problems, I'll just use it until can afford to wait for an RTD. Too much business to worry about fuzziness in the screen!
