I am not sure if this has been posted about before or not, but the search feature did not turn up any results.

Anyway, my new E1405 is emitting a high pitched noise that is pretty constant. Any idea of what it is and how to disable it if possible?

Unplug the laptop from the wall adapter, turn off wifi and pop out the cd drive. If the sound still happens, set the power options to maximum battery life and close every running application. Turn the laptop upside down (carefully!) and listen to the fans running inside. Do the same with power options set to maximum performance and run some applications that have high processing demands.

See if you can find exactly where the sound is coming from.

    Thoughts:

The backlight assembly may be making the noise.
A fan is wearing out prematurely.
The wireless card is making unwanted noise.
Hard drive motor or bearings are wearing out prematurely.

My 1405 doesn't make that sound- is that specific to the core 2 series?

My 1405 with the core 2 duo T5600 is fine - no sounds whatsoever.

Maybe I should be more specific.

    My specs are:

    Core 2 Duo T5200 1.60Ghz
    2GB RAM
    Extended 9-Cell Battery
    1440x900 Screen with TrueLife
    DVD Burner

It actually sounds like the sound is coming sort of from the speakers, but I can't quite pinpoint it enough to say that or name any other source with a high level of confidence.

My notebook, an e1405 makes a high-pitched sound. it comes from the left side of the screen and I guess it's the ballast for the light. It only does it if the screen it not at full brightness, and quits if I pinch that area of the bezel.

It's kinda annoying. Some people can't hear it, but I can. I'll just deal with it.

I guess high pitched noises are normal then. I am not really too annoyed at the sound though I wish it would stop, but I can live with it. I am more worried about having defective components since I am still within my return period.

But it looks like this is pretty normal, so oh well, unless someone knows a solution to this I guess I will just have to live with it. I am mostly going to be using my laptop in noisy places anyway.

My E1505 with a T7200 makes a similar noise, it comes from around where the CPU is. After reading that it's normal, I just live with it and I pretty much always have music going so I don't normally hear it.

My E1505 also has the high pitched noise but there is a fix. :)
You either install RMClock and check the Halt option (google 4 it, it is on RMClock forums) or just install Notebook Hardware Control (NHC), it does the same thing as RMClock + a few extras. With NHC the high pitched noise is gone (I generally use Dynamic Switching for CPU speed) but as soon as I exit NHC and reboot my sistem, the pitched noise is back.
I guess I'll be using NHC from now on ....
