    Hi everyone,

I have a fairly new Inspiron E1405 with Core2 Duo 1.8Ghz, 120 HDD, 1GB RAM, latest BIOS etc. and it turns out that my fan is almost running non-stop once the CPU temperature is around 43C--47C. Even if the fan is running, the temperature hovers within that range. Is this common/normal? Note that the fan is not running at high rpm and not making a whole lot of noise, but I am just concerned that it is running almost w/o stopping.

I look forward to your comments.

    Thanks,
    - Jyoti

this doesn't seem exactly normal but not unheard of.
Have you tried cleaning the fan area with canned air?
there is a freeware program that I can't think of the name right now(sorry 'bout that) that can control the speed of the fan, as well as when it turns on.
other options are to get a laptop cooler but it's probably not necesary.
sorry I couldn't be of more help
    hope you find a solution
    Phillip

Phil: Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have tried canned air to clean out from outside; haven't opened the "hood" yet. I handle my machine fairly well, so I doubt it will gather a lot of dust in about 10 weeks or so (i.e., the time since I bought it).

I believe you were talking about I8k fan control s/w. I have used that too (and that's what is giving me the CPU readings), but I haven't set up manual controls yet because I want to find out why the heck the fans are running constantly.

Is it because I have a Core2 Duo instead of a Core Duo?

no, the processor has nothing to do with it.
it has something to do with the fan settings.
aparrently they/it is set to run when the temp reaches the 40s
the program I was thinking of is called SpeedFan, but I8k works too.

I guess my this question is pretty naive: is it common for CPU's to hover in ~40C even when doing light-weight stuff (mostly web browsing, word processing etc.)?

Your signature says that you own a E1505 -- do you encounter this issue/problem as well?

yes the inspiron line tends to hover in these temps.
though a good cooler or undervolting will drop them.
I've got a cooler so my fan rarely kicks on unless I'm using it in my lap.
