She is only doing word processing, multimedia, and IM and stuff. Will that be faster than an AMD Sempron? Good deal? Thanks![]()

I think you can get around the same for a bit cheaper if you look in the Sunday paper deals page for Best Buy, Comp USA, Office Max, etc...
-
Do go with a dual core processor... there will be a limited price difference.
-
i just got mine - similar specs... 1.5 gig of ram, 120 hard drive, 1.83 ghz core 2 duo, 9 cell battery... have no regrets. great machine!
-
why dont you look at DELL Outlet. notebooks are like brand new so u cant tell the difference ( especially reffurbished)
i got core duo/1GB/100GB for 669. and it looks as the new ones. -
Well similar deals at like Best Buy and stuff I am using my Dell credit.
Can you show me where the limited price difference is with Core Duo? -
I just went to Dell Outlet and found these for you. There are three different categories in the Outlet. Here is a detailed description of the three. Generally speaking people have had great experiences with the Outlet. The ones you see at the top are nothing but new machines, while "Certified Refurbished" machines may be just as new/function just as well at an even cheaper price.

Too bad I cant ****ing cancel my order.. stupid me
-
Why is that?
-
just have to warn you that the load up time is ridiculously long - about 3 minutes from startup to when the lappy can actually do work. It's pretty fast after that - i had no noticeable lag when i ran photoshop, open office, firefox and mcafee.
-
Is there a cancel button -
Oh is that the case? I'm not sure but I thought there is a way to cancel online. When I ordered mine I didn't have to cancel so I never really paid attention to it. But even if you can't cancel now, you have 21 days to return the machine once you have received it.
-
Well I can chat with a CS rep and they can cancel it for me.
-
Just shop around in the Outlet for a couple of days. Sometimes you'll find great deals and other times you'll see something totally not worth the price. Good luck!
-
But you know what I am sure the SOLO is fine for what she is going to be doing.....not a huge difference. Might be a big difference to me since I got a E1505 with T7200 lol
-
You're absolutely right. In fact, if Word processing, Internet browsing and IM is all she will be doing then even a good Pentium M will do. Having a dual core makes the rig a little more future proof, however, so that now she can use Word, be on IM, zip a couple of files, run a Windows update, and run a virus scan all at once! Plus, if you can get a better one with about the same price (if not cheaper), why not go that route?
-
True.. Hmmm. This si what ill do, within 21 days she doesnt like it or it is slow or not able to use her stuff correctly then ill send it back and get a better one. Love the 21 day return policy
-
Are there any benchmarks to show just how much of a difference there is SOLO and DUO?
-
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
the main speed increase you will see from a duo would be in multitasking, if the machine is largely going to be used as a unittasker, it wont make any difference for the most part, however, the future is dual core, and software companies are starting to take advantage of multithreading, I'd go dual core, I'd also cancel the 1405 and take a hard look at the 1501, amds chips lag a little in benchmarks, but they do hold their own in real world applications, and they have the ati x1150 graphics chip, wich smokes the gma 950
-
I agree. If you're not dead set on a 14.1", then you might as well go with a 15.4". It will offer a much better GPU, at around the same price as a 1405 according to the Outlet.
-
Yeah, she wants a small laptop. Shes not very strong so 6LBS is too much
-
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
as I stated earlier, dual core shines in multi tasking, in unitasking, the solo will actually be slightly faster, but fire up a couple programs at once, the solo will be on its knees beggong for mercy, and the duo will be begging for more, look at it this way, say you have to 200 sandwiches, traditionally dual core wouldnt help, you would just have one core working on it, if the app is programmed for multi threading, then both cores go to work on it and it gets done much quicker, then there is the case where you need 200 sandwiches, and 200 cookies, one core working on both would be really slow, but with a dual core, one makes the sandwiches, while the other makes the cookies at the same time. -
-
The 1501 only offers AMD chips and was just introduced, while the 1504 offers Intel chips.
-
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
I'd go for the xps m1210 in the outlet then, you can get one with a core duo, sometimes a core2duo, 1 gig ram, hd and optical vary, and the intel gma 950 from low to mid 800's, every now and then you see them in the upper700's, 12.1" screen, right around 4lbs, I recently got one through the outlet with a core2duo t5600,2gigram, and a gf7400, its by far been my most satisfying computer purchase, and I've made a lot of them -

I just wanted to recommend the same thing.
Iceman, I've seen several of your posts recommending that laptop. I'm really in love with it as it is IMHO the best looking Dell laptop. I really want to get one, but I don't know how well I would cope with the 12.1" screen. Do your eyes get tired after a long duration? -

Yeah I just saw one yesterday. 2Ghz C2D with 2GB RAM and GF7400 all for $1200 with tax and shipping included. I was very very tempted, but needed a good excuse to buy it because I just got my E1705 three months ago. Thanks for your expertise - now I want one even more.
Alright, sorry for hijacking this thread. We are back on track. -
-
Ok How about this. My MAX Budget is 800 dollars, think you could piece together a configuration for me?
E1405 would be prefered -
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
I would try and hold off, add an extra 100 to your budget, and grab an outlet m1210,if small and light is what your looking for, with loads of power. When do you need to order? there arent any listed in the outlet right now, but that doesnt mean there arent any, people shove them all in the cart to keep others from getting them while they look at them, pisses me off, I'll keep 2 or 3, then if I know I wont buy one, I put back out, all during last week there were tons of them on the page, more than I've ever seen, you can also call them, tell them the features your looking for and your price range, and they can usually hook you up with what you want if you have realistic expectations, good luck
note, outlet purchases carry the same warranty and extended warranty options as configure yourself machine, you just cant change the hardware/software options, and as a big +, they usually ship the day you order -
I have to order by tomorrow. My budget isnt moving because it is from my Preferred account. Could you please help me? I really want the E1405 because she wants new..(I know I know) but thats the way she is. SO What are the best E1405 specs for about 815?

most of the machines in the outlet are new, you have the refurbs, that went out and got sent back, then you have previous ordered/ order that never shipped out, and scratch and dent, wich may or may not have left the factory, most of them are brand new and never shipped, they just get slightly banged up in the manfacturing process, my s&d e1505 had a small hairline scratch on the lid that took me 1/2 an hour to find, never would have noticed it if I werent looking for it, below is a refurb, but its fully loaded and just under 800

vista home basic is a waste, aside from the splash screen, you wont notice anything different than xp.That system isnt bad, but you can do a lot better for the same price, I'd lurk around the outlet a little longer, and throw anything promising in your cart, then discard when your sure you dont want them, just set the filters for PON, and whatever you want the minimum of your components to be, I'd set the cpu to all, and keep hitting the submit button, the site updates constantly, one minute there isnt squat, the next minute theres a flood of them, next minute squat, good luck
-
Yeah in Dell's Outlet you only have 15 minutes to buy an item before it becomes availabe to others.
If you are going with an E1405, then you have basically the following options:
- TrueLife? I definitely like TL but whether or not your GF likes it is another thing. Maybe you have TL on your E1505 and can show her the effects of it. Also, with a screen capable of a higher resolution you can always turn it down, while if you get a screen with a lower native resolution you are stuck with it.
- Go with the lowest option of RAM and upgrade aftermarket. 1GB is the lowest option for the E1405 I believe.
- Intel GMA 950 - you don't have much of a choice here
- It might be hard to enjoy Vista at its fullest using GMA 950. I recommend getting another machine and a better GPU if she really wants Vista. Otherwise, go with XP as 1. your CPU is 32bit and 2. Vista is not yet a "mature" OS.
- Either a 1.60Ghz or 1.73Ghz Core Duo would be sufficient and within your budget range. Sometimes you can be lucky and find better CPUs and still be within your range.
- 80GB to a 100GB should keep you in your price range.
Other than those mentioned above you really don't have many things to worry about. Just grab the best one you come across in the Outlet as quick as you can. I also recommend that you shop around in the Outlet for a few days before you purchase. -
-
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
yeah, you can keep items as long as you add/drop within 15 minutes, and windows vista home basic doesnt have areo anyway, pretty much all the new whiz bang features are left out, or will be made available for xp, so its pretty much a waste of 55 bucks
-
Well like I will keep saying, this is for my girlfriend so... will that machine do basic things fast and not lag? Web searching, Itunes, Burning CDs and watching videos.
Well I dont have to upgrade to Windows Visa if I dont want to but if she ever did want Vista it would be better to buy basic for her at 55dollars instead of the 199 i think its retailed at.
Come on I have to at least have a better PC then my gf to have some self-confidence -
E1405 for girlfriend, what do you think?
