My new E1405 seems to make a highpitched noise whenever cpu is idle. The noise goes away when comp is running under a heavy load but more often than not, the hiss is very evident. :(

I've searched around on this forum and have read a couple of threads related to this problem but I still have a couple of questions. Is this noise normal or a bad sign? Do all e1405s make this noise or should I contact dell?

    Hmm this is odd.
Unreal, do you know if the noise is a bad sign or not?

Happens on mine too and is a little more apparent while running on the battery. However, you can only hear it in a silent room.

BTW, there have been several threads documenting this case with various core duo processors

If I was you I would not pull my hair about it

Yeah, I read through many of the threads but i noticed that I only experience the hissing noise when a USB device is plugged in.
Is this the same for you guys as well?

Since I don't have any USB devices, I guess not LOL. Mine is pretty soft, I don't know about your's but I pretty much have to be in a silent room with no outside noise. or have my ear up near the keyboard.

my e1405 seems just fine. I can hear the fan slightly when i'm at idle, but its nothing like a hissing noise or annoying to me at all. My laptop is next to my bed on my desk and i have no problems sleeping or doing paperwork or homework with mine.

If its annoying, i'd get it replaced/fixed.
