I am thinking about getting the E1405 laptop, and keep hearing things about the light leakage. It sounds like there are alot of people with it. I am trying to get a percentage of the people with light leakage and those without it.

I think its there on all them including mine. It's honestly only noticeable with a black background. Mine extends up about half an inch from the bottom of the screen. The screen is not the best quality out there, but you expect that really for the price you pay.

    I'm still happy with mine.

There is no such screen as UltraSharp in E1405. According to Dell, even WXGA+ screen in E1405 is not UltraSharp.

Having said that, I have the WXGA+ Truelife screen, and there is definitely a light leakage on the black background. I'm considering returning the laptop or replacing the LCD panel.

It's all just marketing terms that really mean nothing in a technical sense anyway :)

I dunno.....the standard lcd is 1280x800,the so called ultra sharp is 1440x900
I took it that the ultra sharp lcd were the higher resolution, so for a 14.1 at 1440x900, I would consider that ultra sharp for the class its in

I just got my e1405, the screen is great with little bit of light leakage, but it doesn't bother me, since I don't turn it on and look at a complete black screen all day.

One of the keys on my E1405 keyboard requires to be hit twice before it works.. Is my keyboard dodgy?

... A little off topic?

Anyway, I have the WXGA+ w/ Truelife. There is some light leakage, but the only time it really bothers me is when watching widescreen DVD's.

So, do people think it is worth upgrading the screen or not. Does it make a difference in the light leakage normally or not?

Well, that of course depends on your preference.

Which resolution do you prefer? Some people think WXGA is too big, others think WXGA+ is too small.

Do you prefer a matte or shiny screen? Do reflections and glares bother you? Will you be using the laptop outdoors often? If so, it'll be almost impossible to see with a Truelife screen.

Just because the other screen costs $50, doesn't make it the "better" choice. It really depends on personal preference.

Regardless, light leakage will probably be AT LEAST a minor issue on both screens.
