I've heard that the d620's are "problematic" and the e1405 is better quality and screens have more options.

Can anyone comment? I'll be using the machine on a docking station at home and also will take it to office (work for myself). Primnary functions for use are Office apps, several ASP apps, web, email, music, burning cds and thats about it.

Also, can you get these w/the AMD 64 bit mobile chip? Thinking ahead to Longhorn......

umm...the d620 aren't really problematic, in comparison to the inspiron series, at least. and it is untrue that the e1405 is better quality. if we're talking about build quality, the d620 is much better with a magnesium alloy chassis. the e1405 does have the additional option for glossy screens though. and no, you cannot get a dell with amd. if you want amd, you should look to hp. however, you don't need a 64-bit processor for vista (longhorn). so you shouldn't worry about that...

The D620s are not problematic. It is an excellent business machine that is not suited to the mainstream user who wants an entertainment machine.

It is more durable, lighter, smaller and has a faster recharge time and better customer service.

Either machine will accomplish your tasks. If it is about money get the 1405.

What are you going to be using the laptop for? If your going to use it for anything multimedia related the E1405 is the way to go. Much better speakers and more media options (Media direct). Weights about 1lb more than the d620. But if your going to be traveling more and don't care for media on the go then the D620 is good. It's lighter and better built. In addition it also comes with a 3 year warranty.

My Dell rep said the E1405 with the 6 cell battery only weighed 5.1-5.3 lbs. The D620 with the 6 cell (not the 4 cell which is what they say weighs 4.37), is supposed to weigh 5 lbs. Not much of a difference if you ask me.

    Hello SFO, =)

Both machines would perform well for those tasks. Neither is available with a 64bit chip as of yet. But that's okay. Vitsa (longhorn) is coming to a store near you with a 32bit version eventually.

Here's a small breakdown of these two machine

    E1405
    - Cheaper
    - Glossy Screen (Better, brighter colors)
    - Multimedia (Buttons on the front to control media)
    - Should be find for trips to the office then home

    D620
    - Build quality/ durability
    - Lighter
    - Business Class warrenty
    - Matte Screen (No glare, this is what people have been dissatisfied with)
    - Better suited for frequint travel

Both probably get pretty good battery life. The D620s aren't problemmatic as has been stated in previous posts. It's the screen has been a problem for some people, poor viewing angles, and dimness. That's a matter of personal taste really. It'll be bright enough for some, to dim for others, and others won't care.

Sounds like the D620 to me. If you are using it mostly in the docking station the screen won't matter much.

To add to what Metamorphical said...

    E1405
    - Better battery life: 6 cell ~4.5hrs ,9 cell ~7hrs
    - 5.47lbs 6 cell ~5.7lbs 9 cell

    D620
    - Less battery life: 6 cell ~3.5hrs 9 cell ~4.7hrs
    - 4.38lbs 4 cell ~4.5lbs 6cell ~4.7lbs 9 cell (currently there is a free upgrade from the 4 to 6 cell. And the 6 cell doesn't stick out more than the 4 cell. The 9 cell sticks out almost an inch out the front. Total of 1 lb lighter than the E1405, not to mention thinner.)

Just so you know the Latitude comes with a basic 3 year warranty vs. the E1405's 1 year.

And none of Dell's computers can include a AMD cpu; dell is intel only.
