That looks like a standard 1/2" high "slimline" optical drive and should be easy to replace because all these drives have the same size and shape.

There's just one thing to check. Look on Device Manager and under the ATA/ATAPI controllers check that there is one device on the Primary IDE channel and one device on the Secondary IDE channel. If this is the case then you have no problem with any replacement. If you have two devices on the primary IDE channel then you need a new optical drive which is pre-set to Slave. This will be harder to find.

Changeover is quite simple. Find and remove the screw(s) that hold the optical drive in place then remove any fixing brackets and connectors off the old drive and put on the new one. Finally carefully remove the fascia off the old drive (it is held on by some plastic clips) and put on the new drive, then reinstall.

You can get the latest 8X DVD drive and it should work. If region changing compatibility is a consideration, look for a Liteon drive since there is a free piece of software to give these region-free operation. More at rpc1.org.
