Recently ive ordered e1505 and I am really happy with it but i have noticed that the NEC r/w dvd is a bit noisy - like a fan blowing or something similar. I am just curious if anybody else is / was having such issue. I am not sure if this is such a big problem , since it might be something normal, but my old compaq notebook had a nec drive and it was much more silent than this one. Should i be worried and ask for a replacement?

It's not an issue - all drives will sound like that. The media in the drive spins very rapidly and will create a 'whirring' noise. It is louder than your fan, especially at maximum speed.
Your old Compaq probably had a slower drive. Newer ones read CDs at 24X.

Yea, don't worry about it. I got the Dell i6000, and it has a Sony Drive which is suppose to be even louder. However, I don't find it bad at all. You should be able to here it...it is a good sign...it means it is working! :)

is it making that much noise playing a dvd? or like burning one? cause i know burning a dvd makes it spin (which makes it louder) faster

It primarly does it when it is starting up or when you first insert the disc in. As for burning, that usually will be a bit louder and continue through the process because of the nature of burning discs.

It isn't so loud that you can't hear anything else. It is just loud for a few seconds when you are watching a DVD or listening to music.

Well when I am watching dvd it is like a blowing fan all the time till the end of the movie but I guess this is something normal since my friend's HP ze2000 DVD is noisy as well.

Ya, my E1705 is the same way. The drive sounds like a leafblower going off whenever it's doing something.

Maybe that is a new problem on the systems with core duo. I don't have that problem, but i have a 9300. Mine is really loud when I am starting it up.

Well i guess there is no point of replacing the drive then, since I might have the same problem with the new one. I am not using the dvd that much anyways, so I can live with it.

You know there is software that can slow your optical drives down to make them quieter. Nero has one called DriveSpeed. You might be able to find some freeware software like that, since that type of program isn't hard to write.

My DVD drive also makes this noise but if I put my palm over the DVD drive(immediately to the left of the touchpad) the pressure quietes the DVD drive down. Im not sure whether this is normal or not and I dont know if I can trust a dell rep to tell me it is. The noise only goes on when the driver is going at max speed I think. Are you guys having a similar issue with your E1505?

    That is normal.

The vibrating issue all depends on how Dell mounted the drive. If it is in there as it should be and still overly vibrating (compare it to other notebooks), then it is a design issue. A way to reduce this is to elevate the back of your notebook a bit.

I'm going to guess that the base of your notebook is not entirely flat and as a result, when it is resting on all four feet, it isn't entirely stable. The DVD drive can easily cause more vibrations that way. Elevating the back of the notebook can reduce that as I said, since it would only be resting on two feet.

Chaz is correct, i was thinking, my E1505's DVD drive is almost silent, its because im always running it on a homemade stand with extra rubberised feet that silences the vibration and elevates the back, its a normal problem thou i wouldnt worry about it
