My God, This computer sucks. I've had so many issues with it just in the last month and a half. When I first got it I had issues with an error screen and I had to compeletely restart the thing to a manufacturer level twice. I took it to my friends house so I could work on a college paper over a weekend and THAT screwed my IP Adress into oblivion, I've had issues with keys falling off -solved that on my own time- And now, whenever I put a disc in the drive CD/DVD, the sound skips and the disc drive growls at me. Does anyone know what this is or what I should do? Preferrably not involving calling Dell yet again I've spent countless hours on the phone with them and do not care to sit through it agian.![]()

try chatting with them over the internet and the once you do that say that you can not afford to wait and would like a replacement system
-
Where do you go to do that?
-
go to support.dell.com and then click chat with us. enter your service tag. I am assuming you live in the US.
-
Yeah, I live in teh US. I'll try that.

It is better than talking on the phone imo -
Thanks, though apparently actually gtting connected to someone takes a bit of time, huh?

on the CD/DVD issue, check to make sure that your laptop is not set to PIO mode. To check this go to the device manager-->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers-->primary IDE Channel-->advance settings.
It should be set to DMA if available. Also check the secondary IDE channel. If either of these are set to PIO, then uninstall it and restart your laptop. XP should detect the hardware automatically and set the driver to the right setting.
On the keyboard problem, you can always request a new keyboard from dell as long as you are in warranty. They will send you one free of charge, and you'll get it in about two business days. They don't give you any hassle if your keyboard breaks. -

Start Control Panel-->Performance adn Maintanence-->System--Click the device tab
-
Is this right?

The secondary IDE mode explains your skipping. You're in PIO mode. Set it to DMA if Available ...just like your IDE 1 and reboot. When you get back into Windows...check again and it should say for secondary ide...Ultra DMA Mode 2
