Everytime I try to burn a DVD with Nero, I got a "error reading data" or "reading disc failed" message and it wouldn't continue. I have the TSSPcorp DVD-RW drive.

This problem only occurs when I try to burn a DVD, I can burn CD-Rs with Nero without any problem, my laptop recognizes both CDs or DVDs I put in, and I'm able to access the content of the disc (listening to music, watching movie). But as soon as I try to burn a DVD it'd give me the reading disc error message. At first I thought it was a disc problem, but I tried different DVDs (all original discs) and the results were the same with the error message. Then I tried the same DVDs on my desktop I was able to burn them with Nero without any problem.

I haven't tried another DVD recording program yet, but does anyone else have the same problem burning DVDs with Nero? Do you think I got a bad drive?

Chances are there is copy write encryption. If I were to tell you how to get around it I would probably get banned. The moral answer is it's illegal to copy your own legally bought dvd with your own hard earned money and therefore you shouldn't do it  .

However google is your friend.

Check for any updates to Nero and check for any firmware updates for the drive from Dell. That model does get a lot of problem posts on the Dell Forums. I have the Sony DW-Q58A in mine and with Nero 6.6.1.4 I haven't had any problems, although the quality scans using Nero's CD-DVD Speed aren't as good as what I get on my desktop drives.

Thanks for your help. I tried the TSSP DVD+-RW drive firmware first but it didn't help. Then I downloaded and updated Nero from ver 6.6.0 to ver 6.6.1.4, problem solved! Now I can burn DVDs without any problem! So looks like it was a software issue.

Question on the Nero version, when I checked the Nero 6 update page, it showed there were 6 Packages and it recommended Package 1 and Package 2 for just update. But since I only installed Nero Burning Rom, so does that mean I only need Update Package1? I'm a little confused.

    Any input will be appreciated.

If you only want to burn discs with Nero, you'll be fine.

Package 2 has some nice utilities that can come in handy. Nero Vision Express is a nice, easy way to combine multiple video files into one DVD (or VCD,SVCD) with menus. Nero Showtime is a decent media player that will play some xvid and divx files that Media Player barfs on without additional codecs. And Nero Recode will let you copy DVD's. It won't work directly on copy protected DVD's, but Google can help you there.

The rest of the stuff in Package 2 I've never really used.
