    Hi All,

Bought a laptop for my Girlfriend and while running Vista she had very few issues even with the Beta SP1 BUT I hate Vista. I removed Vista and brought it down to XP Pro. Every Device Driver at the Dell Site worked but I could not get the Secure Digital Card slot to work. If you have this issue then install Windows normally and get SP2. Then proceed on to getting the appropriate Microsoft Driver for your Secure Digital Device.

Below are enhanced Drivers beyond the basic MS SD Driver.

A High Speed SD Secure Digital card does not work correctly in a Windows XP-based computer

Hotfix for Windows XP that adds support for SDHC cards that have a capacity of more than 4 GB

I used the 4GB card under Vista for ReadyBoost and this option is available in XP when you point your swap area to the SD card. Works faster than a HD.

    Helpful Info

When Defraging your HD turn off System restore. Set Virtual Memory to "No Paging File" and turn off Hibernation. This removes those "unmovable blocks" and allows the Defragment Program more freedom to align blocks properly. Remember to turn the items back on when finished.

Turn off Quicktime and Sun Java's (located in Control Panel) updates.
Remove unneeded Icons (TSR's) next to your clock in lower right by using "msconfig" such as Sound control.

You can remove tasks listed in Task Manager even if not listed in "msconfig" by killing the task. Doing a Search for the Task Name. Then renaming the task. Please verify if the process is truly needed by checking here.

If you become familiar with your processes then you'll know what's going on inside and can make changes for the better.

Go to BlackViper.com to get registry patches to turn off unnecessary services thus gaining more Memory. Recommend downloading "Safe" & "Default" patches. Default is to go back in case you may have lost a function that was needed but the Safe Registry Patch is quite safe and does not impact most users.

Shut off unused devices in BIOS. ie Serial/Parallel Interfaces.

Become familiar with your event logs located in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer.

Free Antivirus Avast.com First on the block for Vista Antivirus and overall has caught and removed things that Norton could only dream of. Avast does not work well with ZoneAlarm so I suggest using Comodo.com Firewall. Windows Defender for Spyware. These items do not load your system down as bad as other programs.

Get OpenOffice instead of Windows Office. Virtually the same functionality but OpenOffice is free.

Lots of XP tips on the Net for Fast Boot/Shutdown and a more efficient Machine.

No Question or Problem but just a notification so people can do a Google Search and find this and maybe help them out.
