Hey everyone,
Well, I bit the bullet and ordered two identical Dell notebooks on the September 16th and they both arrived yesterday, which makes me very happy. Just because I'm still gushing a bit, here's what I got;
Even though they're working great so far, I do have a couple of questions.
Right now I don't have the time to do a complete format and reinstallation of XP so I'm wondering what you, the Dell notebook "experts", believe I can safely delete. I've already gotten rid of all the online offers and extra trial software using Add/Remove Programs, but what else can I safely get rid of without hurting Win XP and Office?
On a related note, everytime I start the notebook and check Taskmanager I find "gtbeulalauncher.exe" running. I think it's some sort of end user license agreement thing, but I have NO idea for what or how to stop it from loading. Any ideas?
Thanks
GeekMan

eula is probably end user license agreement, for some kind of bloatware maybe?? just go to add remove programs and anything you see thats not microsoft, java, office, xp related, you can probably remove, but to be safe you should list or screenshot a page of the programs and it would be much easier for people to tell you what to remove and what to keep...
-
to do a screenshot just hit print screen with the most amount of programs visible in the add/remove screen

Good suggestion. Here's my complete Add/Remove list.
In case the image won't show here, you can view it here.
Thanks! -
you say you don't have time to do a reformat, yet if you had started when you made your first post, you'd be done by now.

gives you a list of all of the junkware on the Inspirons. Personally, by the time you remove all of the software and all of the unnecessary keys/folders, you could have formatted.
You can disable the launcher.exe in MSCONFIG. -

I do realize that, but since I need these computers tomorrow for business, I cannot afford to have a mistake on my part cause them to be unstable, unfinished or unusable. Right now, straight out of the box, I can use them for the next two months for work (and since I rent them to my clients they will be fully paid for by December!) but I'm looking to make them less 'bloated' so that they work faster and better while I'm on the road. Once things slow down and I have a few days free I'll format and reinstall XP properly. But for now, I need the quick and simple fix. -
for some reason i didnt get a lot of bloatware, but there are WAY too many processes running on my e1505. I have uninstalled most of the things that i think were bloatware (eg. McAfee stuff & games) but these processes are annoying me since i have no idea what they are.
I made a HiJackthis log, and if someone would be kind enough to tell me which processes are definately useless, i would be very grateful. Thanks alot.

If you want to cut down the processess and optimize your laptop, i suggest following our "How to Optimize your laptop" in our Dummy forums. This will give you the best advice as to different sites which will give you information on what processess you need and don't need.
There are several XP processess that need to be turned off but these depend on the user. As for the junkware, goto MSCONFIG, and on the last tab, uncheck everything that you think you will not need. The good news is that XP has it so that if you uncheck anything by accident, XP will start up still as long as you are only unchecking items in the last tab. -
I've heard about some people who used a program called Pc Decrapifier to remove bloatware from their Dell, is that any good?
Thanks,

Thanks to your link I've deleted a lot of the bloatware from one of the notebooks and it boots noticably faster than the factory default one. If 'book 1 is still stable and working well after all-day testing in real world situations tomorrow I'll do the same to number 2 tomorrow night.
Thanks to everyone for all their help. -

Don't forget to install a spyware scanner, like Spy-Bot. Will definitely get rid of some crapware in your laptop.
