I'm experiencing two issues with my E1505 that I am not sure if it's normal or not normal.
A) When converting ("ripping") from an audio CD to mp3 (or aac), using iTunes or WMP, it seems that it goes very slowly. On iTunes it says it's like 5 or 8 times (depending if it's the beginning or end of the CD), and WMP take on average a minute and twenty seconds to rip an 8 minute song.
B) When ripping in iTunes, the entire computer becomes very sluggish. I can't even type - each letter takes a half a second to show up after I press the key. This is not a problem when using WMP.
Can you please see if your E1505 has these same issues? Mine has a Duo 1.83, 7200 rpm, DVD burner (that is supposed to read CD's at 24x).
Thank you.....

does it have a virus? when it copies, check your cpu usage, and see which process is taking all your cpu.
could be the CD, but thats prolly not it. only thing else, i would think would be the drive itself...
also, try another program for ripping the CD. also check the quality you are ripping it at. higher quality would prolly slow down the actual read speed. sorry for so many possiblities -
This sounds more like a problem with iTunes than the actual system. It also depends on what format you are ripping it to. Ripping to an MP3 or any similar format generally takes longer due to the media type. I've noticed that some songs are very quick to rip and some take forever. It depends on what type of cd, and sometimes even just a certain song can take up to 20 minutes.

The CPU (according the task manager) is only at 50 to 70 percent, so I don't think it is that. I keep my virus definitions up to date and scan often, so I don't think it is that.
I have tried this with a few CD's.
The problem of slow ripping I noticed with iTunes and also WMP, but the problem of the lagging everything (even typing) is only with iTunes.
Please, if you have any other possibilities, let me know..!
Thank you. -
On my old computer, with slower everything, I didn't have these problems.
I have tried a few different formats, ripping to mp3 160 or aac 128 (in iTunes) and mp3 128 (in WMP) and the problem is there in all cases. -
I suspect it's the new right's management issue at work here, that part of iTunes, or for the most part, any other format, would kick in when you're ripping songs.

I just ripped a 7:13 long song to mp3 at a 320 average bitrate using qcd. Timed at 44 seconds.

I don't think it is rights managemnet stff because it happend even with CDs that I burned myself. Also becasue it didn't happen on my last computer.
I'll try to convince Dell to replace the drive. -
Might be the PIO/Ultra DMA 2 mode switcheroo on your optical drive, do a search on the forums to find how to see if that is the case.

Both contollers are set to DMA.

I have a 2.0 duo and i have that 2 but it speeds up after a bit

@mikkroik:
Someone told me - and it seems to be true - that read speeds are better as you get further from the middle of the CD (i.e. further from the begininning).
Do you mind checkin what read speeds you get for the beginning and for the middle? Thank you. (iTunes is an easy place). Also, are you converting to mp3 or something else?
E1505 owners - please do me a favor
