I've noticed that the hinges on my year old E1505 are getting looser as time goes by. Is this something that can be fixed if the screen's hinges eventually get really loose?

That would be great as that's the only thing really stopping me from buying another E1505 right now (instead of going to the D series notbooks).

Depending on which way they are loose you may be out of luck. If they are loose in the open/close sense, I think you are stuck unless you can get dell do so something. if they are loose as you try to "twist" the screen you can tighten the screws beneath the power button cover--go to dell's website and you'll see what i mean. you use a screwdriver on the right-top-edge of the noteboook and then you can take the very top strip off. there are some bolts beneath.

Not sure what you mean by "twist" the screen? But I am referring to opening and closing and having the screen stay at a position during use. It's not bad right now, but it is a lot looser than when it was new a year ago. So I'm wondering what will happen in another 12 months...

I've had the same problem with me inspiron 6400, it isn't the screws that you are referring to. It's the screws that are behind the plastic bezel around the screen.

If you're not to afraid to use a philips screwdriver you can take off all 6 round rubbers from the bezel. Screw out all those screws and remove the plastic bezel. You'll see the way the panel is attached to the hinges and you'll notice two screws on each side. Tighten them, preferably with your screen lying flat down resting on something so there's no torq on the hinges.

If you're laptop is still under warranty I'd just phone Dell though ;)

When looking at the screen, are you referring o the four round rubber dots up top and the 2 dots on the bottom corner? Pop those off and there are screws underneath them? Doesn't sound too bad....

Yep that's it, the bezel itself is clicked into place (like most plastics), so you will have to carefully force (you don't need much force ;)) them apart.

If you want to check the screws vespoli is referring to, make sure you have a flathead screwdriver. At the far right of the laptop, between the white strip and the grey part you will see a little notch you can put the screwdriver in there anf pry off the grey strip (with the powerbutton and lights in it)

    Good luck ;)

When you did this, was the notbook closed after you popped off the bezel or did you have the screen open, laying flat on a table or some surface? Thanks ;)

Oh by flat I mean lying completely open, opening the lid as far as you can. Best to do it on a hard service and support the lid with a book of somesorts. that way you can tighten the screws better.

You don't really have to have it open like that to get the bezel off (you take the bezel off from the inside of the laptop, it's the grey rim you are looking at when you're looking at your screen.

Although this is quite easy to do, my screws were tight when I checked this. I'm thinking it must be the hinges themselves that are loose/worn. Dell claims they will replace them with new ones if it's still under warranty. But if it/yours isn't then you are SOL. I asked if I could purchase new ones from them and do it myself and they said no. On a brighter note (maybe) if you are planning on buying the new 1520/1720 Inspirons then you will be happy to know they've started using new style hinges to address this problem. Not that this helps me but figured I'd pass on the info non the less.

I had the same problem with my E1505 I purchased in April of 06. The screen kept on getting more and more wiggly. I pulled off the front bezel and tightened a dozen of screws. There is still some wiggle left, so I need to replace the hinges. I Used the dell "chat" feature and was able to order new hinges for $2. Shipping is 5 so I threw in some screws and other random items to make it worth it.
