I recently sold an M1710 to someone, and now the 7950gtx is dying.
According to this these are compatible GPU's:
    17 inch Video Card Compatibility

I found some cheap X1400's but they are for E1505's and 6400's. They LOOK like they would fit (the longer heatpipe goes the other direction because there are 2 fan spots on m1710's, so its is not the heatpipes I am worried about).
I can't tell about the connectors from the pics though...

    Thanks in advance.

Oh, part numbers for the M1710 cards are CG108 and the E1505s is WF148

Are you asking whether or not you can use the E1505/6400 X1400 in an M1710?

Both models have discrete, removable X1400s, but they have different form factors and are completely incompatible.

There are some x1400 GPU's that can be used in the M1710.

just can't remember off the top of my head which models they were found in.

but I do know the BIOS will reconize them.

    Hi,

I'll be happy to look into that for you. Can you PM me your service tag?

Also, what are the issues you are having with the GPU?

    Thanks,
    Mourin

The M1710 had a few different video cards:

    GeForce 7900 GS
    GeForce 7900 GTX
    GeForce 7950 GTX

The M90 had a few different video card options:

    Quadro FX1500M
    Quadro FX2500M
    Quadro FX3500M

I am highly confident these cards are interchangeable as both the M90 and the M1710 were built on the same chasis.

The M1710 is known for video cards that burn out - I had my video card replaced three times during ownership, and eventually stopped using it to play games, because gaming was the most likely scenario for it to overheat and break.

As a possible alternative workaround - you can use a D-Port docking station that has a PCI slot and use an NVIDA PCI NVS 280 or 400, that will allow you to connect to two external monitors. You can pick up these cards & docking stations for cheap on ebay, though they are not really suitable for gaming.

This is basically what I wanted to know. I know they are shaped differently, but the connectors look like they would be the same. I got a cheap x600 I've heard works, going to gamble it.. But if this is all the info I can get for e1505 x1400's, I'll not bother looking at them.

Docking stations kinda sound bothersome, how cheap are we talking?

And the issue with GPU is that it would not handle load whatsoever until baking, worked briefly, back to old problems...

All the cards that are well known to work with M1710's are NOT cheap. They're all essentially useless as far as performance level, so I just need something that works.

Everything from the M1710, M90, and M6300 is interchangeable. Everything from the E1705/9400 will work in these three as well, but not necessarily the other way around.

This is probably from a D810. I'm fairly certain the PCB is cut such that some M1710/90/6300 screw posts will get in the way again, but I've never actually tried this one. Do tell if it works.

I will update when it comes in. I used gimp to put a half faded x600 over the 7900 image.. SEEMED to be the same. In the thread I linked, someone mentioned they had to remove a screw base or something, though I can't imagine where... But I will mention how it goes :)

    Thanks everyone.

ALRIGHT, long story short, IT WORKED! Though there were some snags:

    1) Indeed it does get blocked by 1 keyboard screw post. I opted not to cut the post but just remove the plastics tab piece that screws into the motherboard entirely.
    2) Only Dell's drivers seemed to work. The ATI legacy driver would not detect the hardware
    3) The X600's heatsink wouldn't fit in with the fan so I put on the 7950's heatsink. Initially it did not make full contact so I used a copper shim.
    4) To get the right resolution, I had to manually select LCD #2 as a primary display... Why it detects 2, and opts for the lowest resolution on the 'default' I don't know.

So the only drawback now is that the keyboard pushes up the input panel ever so slightly but if I hadn't used this laptop previously, I wouldn't think anything of it. And now my 1920x1200 M1710 is running again!
